El balcón abierto. Homenaje a Federico García Lorca.

This is a tribute documentary film to Federico García Lorca, Spanish poet and Universal writer. It is directly inspired by his life and works. The real voice of the poet is the conducting thread this film. His characters come to life: “El Amargo”, from a poem of “El Cante Jondo” to the “Romancero Gitano”. “The woman”  a fading presence that can be traced in many of his poems. “The mother” a real synthesis of his dramaturgy. The balcony is open from the remote and hidden Granada
to the thrilling New York. From the unstoppable horseman to the mysterious and baroque Easter celebrations. From his first steps in life until his final and violent death. Spain is behind it all.

“El balcón abierto” es una película de homenaje al poeta español Federico García Lorca. La película surge y alienta de su vida. A partir de su vida, de sus textos,la voz del propio poeta va hilvanando la trama del film. La cuadrilla antes de la cuadrilla

Before becoming La Cuadrilla, Luis Guridi and Santiago Aguilar joined up with Raul Barbe (directors) and with Flavio Labiano and Miguel Vidal (producers). They formed an enigmatic group which produced thirty short films in Super-8, and seven on 35 mm, between 1980 and 1990.

Their philosophy was to always behave loutishly. Their budgets were divided equally between pop and punk. It didn´t matter what their work was used for television, literature, musicals or adverts … A decade of forcefullness, brevity and war against the pedantical..

Antes de mutar en La Cuadrilla, Luis Guridi y Santiago Aguilar formaban -con Raúl Barbé en la dirección y Flavio Labiano y Miguel Vidal en la producción- parte de un grupo enigmático que perpetró treinta cortos en super-8 y seis en 35 mm. entre 1980 y 1990.

La filosofia fue siempre la gamberrada. Los presupuestos teóricos se repartían a partes iguales entre el pop y el punk: géneros populares sin importar que el formato de origen fuera televisivo, literario, musical o publicitario… Una década de contundencia, brevedad y guerra a la pedantería.

La historia oficial

Alicia Marnet de Ibañez (Norma Leandro) is happily married to her husband Roberto. They have an adopted daughter named Gaby. Alicia is blissfully ignorant about what happened in the military coup until one of her history students asks her if she only believes what the history books say. She embarks on a mission to find if her daughter is the daughter of one of the women who disappeared during the coup. When her husband finds out, he does everything in his power to prevent her from finding the truth, but she’s determined and nothing he does is going to stop her.

Rome. A Spanish Cardinal (Fernando REy) gives his farewell to the Pope and returns to his home town: doctors have informed him he hasnt got long to live. He has also learnt that he has a daughter who has just given birth to his grand daughter. The arrival of the Cardinal to the castillian village where he was born will have an unequal effect on its inhabitants, specially on the Cardinal’s odd own family. The family history is revealed, its fights and reconciliations, the natural daughter and the massive inheritance that he is to bequeath after his death.The Cardinal’s obsession is to finish all arrangements in time. During a pool game with his brother, he informs him that he has decided to marry him to his daughter. All organized, he can now die in peace. A big snowfall, just  like the ones he remembers from childhood, will accompany him during these last moments.

En Roma, un Cardenal español (Fernando Rey) se despide del Papa porque quiere regresar a su pueblo ahora que los médicos le han dado poco tiempo de vida y estar informado de que tuvo una hija que ahora tiene una nieta. La llegada del Cardenal al pueblecito castellano donde nació incide de forma muy dispar en su población y sobre todo en la dispar familia del Cardenal, lo que nos lleva a desvelar la historia de una familia, sus peleas y reconcialiaciones, la hija no reconocida y la impresionante herencia que tiene que poner en regla en previsión de su final. La obsesión del Cardenal es dejarlo todo bien arreglado antes de su muerte. En una partida de billar con su hermano, le informa que ha decidido casarle con su hija (la del Cardenal) ya que nunca pudo ser legalmente reconocida. Todo queda atado y bien atado. El Cardenal ya puede morir en paz. La nieve acompaña sus últimos momentos. De niño, en el pueblo, nevaba.

¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto?

“What Have I Done To Deserve This?” is an intriguing and typically early film starring Almodóvar regular Carmen Maura (Ay Carmela).

Gloria (Maura) is a typical Madrid housewife  living in an anonymous, run-down apartment block. Gloria has problems – her slovenly and disinherited taxi-driver husband is obsessed with an ex-Nazi chanteuse; of her two sons, one has discovered the benefits of dope dealing while the other is a promiscuous homosexual conducting affairs with his schoolmates’ fathers; her self-reliant mother-in-law keeps a pet lizard called “Money”.

Things couldn’t get much worse until a bizarre set of incidents leads Gloria to a murder by ham-bone and a labyrinthine plot to forge Hitler’s diaries!. Almodóvar’s fourth feature is a sharp, erotic and scabrously funny black comedy that displays a warm affection towards its characters and a surprisingly happy ending. 

Las miserias de una humilde ama de casa en su vida cotidiana son el tema central de “Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto?” una tragicomedia que en cierta manera estaría relacionada con el neo-realismo italiano y con el cine de uno de los directores más admirados por Almodóvar, R.W. Fassbinder.

Carmen Maura en uno de los grandes papeles de su carrera, es una de las bazas de la película; pero no menos ajustados se muestran algunos de los intérpretes secundarios, especialmente Verónica Forqué. Para buena parte de la crítica éste es el film más sobresaliente de Almodóvar. Frente a momentos de comedia delirante, practicametne surrealista, se encuentran otros casi patéticos, que retratan la dura vida que ha de sufrir el personaje de Maura.
