“Quijote rides through cinema” is a documentary about the Dismal Knight and his loyal Squire’s adventures in cinema. More than 40 productions from more than fifteen countries endorse the deep impact that the character has had within the cinema industry.
Quijote has gone beyond his local manchego horizon to star in theaters across USA, the former Soviet Union, Australia, Bulgaria, France, Great Britain, Holland, Denmark, the former Yugoslavia, Israel, Finland, Mexico, Portugal or Germany.
Different adaptations from directors such as Orson Welles, Georg-Wilhem Pabst, Eric Rohmer, Grigori Kózintsev or the Spanish Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón y Vicente Escrivá are included in this documentary which highlights the many facets under which the universal Wandering Knight has been portrayed on the silver screen since the beginning of the 20th century to date.
Rioyo and Marchena’s documentary brings together the first movie based on Cervantes’ novel, “Aventures de Don Quichotte de la Mancha” by Ferdinand Zecca and Lucien Nonguet, produced in France in 1903, the first ever Spanish movie to recreate the novel is Narcís Cuyás’ movie produced in 1908 and the many other produced in different countries (at first mainly in France and Italy which were followed by the many tributes paid to the character by american directors).
The documentary also includes the most recent versions, produced already in the 21st century, such as “Lost in La Mancha” by Reith Fulton (2002); “Quijote in Jerusalem” by Dany Rosemberg (2004) o “Donkey-Xote”, the Spanish animation movie which will open later on this year.

La película de Rioyo y Marchena recoge la primera obra basada en la novela de Cervantes, ‘Aventures de Don Quichotte de la Mancha’ de Ferdinand Zecca y Lucien Nonguet, realizada en Francia en 1903.
