Isolda, Dolores’s aunt, sends 5,000 dollars from her house in Rio de Janeiro to her niece in Havana so that she can set up a restaurant – something they both desperately want to do.

Dolores doesn’t know that the dollars are travelling camouflaged in the heel of a dance shoe. The shoes arrive in Havana but they are exchanged time and time again for different things and by different people, although nobody has the slightest idea what is hidden inside them.

When Dolores finds out, she does everything she can to get them back, turning all Havana up-side-down, with the help of her friends José, a Spanish fortune-seeker who pretends he is Cuban to survive and the slightly disturbed Mercedes, a former housekeeper who is also diabetic.
