The war on democracy

“The War on Democracy” es un premiado e ilustrativo repaso a la política de injerencias que Estados Unidos ha llevado a cabo sobre América Latina desde 1945. Bajo el velo de promover la democracia, de cuidar de su seguridad nacional, se esconde el verdadero sentido de su labor, apoyarse en la elites de estados más débiles para asegurarse la posesión de sus recursos naturales. John Pilger realiza entrevistas exclusivas con oficiales estadounidenses del gobierno, incluyendo agentes que revelan por primera vez cómo la CIA ha desplegado y está desplegando su guerra particular en Latino América. Pilger argumenta que la verdadera democracia popular se encuentra más bien entre los países más pobres de Latino América, cuyos movimientos y avances son ignorados por los medios.

Award winning journalist John Pilger examines the role of Washington in America’s manipulation of Latin American politics during the last 50 years leading up to the struggle by ordinary people to free themselves from poverty and racism. Since the mid 19th Century Latin America has been the ‘backyard’ of the US, a collection of mostly vassal states whose compliant and often brutal regimes have reinforced the ‘invisibility’ of their majority peoples. The film reveals similar CIA policies to be continuing in Iraq, Iran and Lebanon. The rise of Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez despite ongoing Washington backed efforts to unseat him in spite of his overwhelming mass popularity, is democratic in a way that we have forgotten or abandoned in the west. True Democracy being a solid 80% voter turnout in support of Chavez in over 6 elections.

El mar

 Manuel Tur and Andrey Ramallo are 10 when the Civil War arrives in Mallorca. They first encounter with the brutality of war when accidentaly watching the execution of the father of one of their friends by the wall of the cemetery. Then years on they meet again in a nursing home for the treatment of tuberculosis. They are both infected but they face their illness in very different way: Ramallo by ignoring it and Manuel by seeking shelter in religion. Their  friendship flourishes again based on Manuel’s fascination for Ramallo’s vitality and Ramallo’s admiration of Manuel’s integrity.
However bit by bit Manuel’s religious stance will start to crack as he realizes that what he feels for Ramallo is something that goes beyond frienship.

Manuel Tur y Andreu Ramallo tienen diez años cuando la Guerra Civil llega a la isla de Mallorca. Su primer encuentro con la crueldad de la guerra se produce al ver cómo fusilan al padre de un amigo frente a la tapia del cementerio. Transcurridos diez años se reencuentran en un sanatorio para tuberculosos de la isla. Ambos, están afectados y afrontan la enfermedad con posturas diferentes: Ramallo ignorándola y Manuel, refugiándose en la religión para evadirse de una muerte que siente próxima. Entre ambos se iniciará una nueva amistada basada en la fascinación de Manuel por la vitalidad de Ramallo y en la admiración de éste por la entereza de Manuel. Pero poco a poco la postura religiosa de Manuel frente al mundo, entra en crisis al darse cuenta que lo que siente por Ramallo es algo más que amistad.

Iluminados por el fuego = Enlightened by fire

Enlightened by Fire portrays the memories of 40-year-old Esteban Leguizamon. In 1982 he was sent to fight on Malvinas Islands as a conscript when he was only 18 years old. An ex-colleague’s attempted suicide triggers wartime memories, the times he shared with two young recruits: Vargas, who tried to commit suicide, and Juan, who died in combat.

He is reminded of not only the horrors of war, the suffering from the cold and hunger, but also the memories of friendship and camaraderie. From Esteban’s perspective we are shown how their lives become slowly entwined by the hand of death. Twenty years after the war Esteban decides to return to the Malvinas in order to confront his past and try to heal his open wounds.

Iluminados por el Fuego narra los recuerdos de Esteban Leguizamón, un hombre de 40 años que, en 1982, cuando tenía sólo 18, fue llevado como soldado recluta a combatir a las islas Malvinas. A partir del intento de suicidio de uno de sus ex compañeros, Esteban se sumerge en los recuerdos de esa guerra que compartió con otros dos jóvenes reclutas: Vargas, el suicida, y Juan, muerto en combate.

Allí aparecen no sólo los horrores propios de la guerra y el padecimiento del frío y del hambre, sino también las historias de amistad y compañerismo. Desde la mirada de Esteban, la película pone en evidencia la lenta y gradual inmersión de sus frágiles vidas en el corazón mismo de la muerte. A los 20 años de la guerra, Esteban decide volver a las Malvinas para reencontrarse con su pasado y cerrar sus viejas heridas.

Guerreros

A unit of army engineers, belonging to the Spanish KFOR contingent receives the order to repair an electrical relay station which has left a group of border villages without electricity in the area known as the “exclusion zone”.

During this mission, members of the team such as Vidal, a young soldier who has recently joined the Professional Army, or the ambitious lieutenant Alonso, become involved not only in an armed conflict but also in an inner struggle against their own convictions.

Una unidad de ingenieros del Ejército, perteneciente al contingente español en KFOR, recibe la orden de arreglar un repetidor eléctrico que ha dejado sin luz a una serie de poblaciones fronterizas, en un área conocida como “zona de exclusión”.

Durante esta misión, integrantes del pelotón como VIDAL, un joven soldado recién llegado al Ejercito Profesional, o el ambicioso teniente ALONSO, se verán inmersos no sólo en un conflicto bélico, sino también en una lucha interior contra sus propias convicciones.

¡Harka!

The Spanish and African forces are fighting on Moroccan soil. Close friends Captain Valcázar and Lieutenant Herrera perform brilliantly in La Harka.

The wife and sister-in-law of another Captain arrive in Morocco, following his death. There they meet Lt. Herrera, who falls in love with the sister-in-law, Amparo, and the two return to Madrid. Soon after, Herrera learns of his comrade´s death back in Morocco and decides to return, putting himself in charge of La Harka.

Amparo pleads with him not to go, but when pushed to decide between love and military duty, the Lieutenant heroically opts for the latter, without hesitation.

Las fuerzas españolas y africanas luchan en tierra marroquí. La harka del capitán Valcázar y del teniente Herrera realizan brillantes acciones, rivalizando en heroicidad. Ambos son muy buenos amigos.

La muerte de otro capitán hace que su mujer y su cuñada viajen a Marruecos. Allí las conoce Herrera, que se enamora de la cuñada, Amparo, que le pide que regrese a Madrid. Así lo hace el teniente, pero al poco tiempo, se entera de la muerte del capitán Valcázar al frente de la harka que queda deshecha en combate. Herrera decide volver y ponerse al frente de la harka para reorganizarla.

Amparo intenta que no lo haga, pero el teniente, puesto a decidir entre el amor y su deber militar, opta por éste último, sin dudarlo, heroicamente.
