Mexico in the 1940’s, Ignacio Jurado, “El Mikado” is a rather quiet, solitary waiter.

He spends his days between Café Ofelia and his collection of pornographic photos. Everything changes when a Spanish prostitute appears in his life. She’s self-destructive, unpredictable and tender. A sadomasochist relationship develops between them. El Mikado would do anything to merit Lola’s love…. Anything…. even killing Franco.

The Colonel waits. They promised him a pension, which for years has remained a promise unfulfilled.

Friday after Friday, solemn and dressed in his finest suit, the Colonel waits by the dock in anticipation of the letter announcing the arrival of his pension. Everyone in the small town knows that he waits in vain. Even his wife, who every Friday watches him getting ready in front of the mirror , preparing to pick up the letter that for years has eluded him. But the Colonel, eyes closed to the all too evident truth, stands by his dream, for it not, what else remains for him? There is hunger in the Colonel’s house. His wife is a sack of bones consumed by asthma, and the Colonel lives ashamed of his poverty with the shame befitting a decent man. As his needs become more pressing… no one writes to the Colonel.

A darkly amusing tale of jealousy and obsessive love, Deep Crimson, by leading Mexican filmmaker, Arturo Ripstein, explores the extreme passion which turn everyday people into violent monsters. Set in 1949 the film is based on the infamous Lonely Hearts murder case, which also inspired Leonard Kastle’s cult film, The Honeymoon Killers. When Coral, an overweight nurse, trawls the lonely hearts colums for a new lover, she meets Nico, a wig-wearing Charles Boyer look-a-like. But Nico is a fake who poses as a Spanish gentleman in order to prey on lonely women, including Coral. When she discovers his trickery, the obsessive and possessive Coral uses the information to her advantage and abandons her children in order to blackmail Nico into becoming her lover. With Coral posing as his sister, this unlikely couple join forces to exploit old, lonely widows and spinsters, robbing them of their fortunes. But their insecure love and extreme dependency lead to appalling acts of violence and ultimately towards a dramatic end.

Based on a classic story by Latin American literature master Juan Rulfo, this drama tells the story of Dionisio Pinzón, a poor peasant who lives  in a small Mexican town with his mother. He becomes interested in cock fighting when someone gives him a badly injured gamecock ; he applies himself to look after the cock until it  eventually recovers then Dionisio sets off to find his fortune in cockfights and gambling. This profound film by Arturo Ripstein could be considered an homage to Buñuel’s work in Mexico.

This landmark film from internationally acclaimed director Arturo Ripstein explores and dissects Latin American machismo and homophobia throught the bittersweet sotry of La Manuela. Played by Roberto Cobo (star of Luis Buñuel’s Los Olvidados), La Manuela is a transvestite who lives in a seedy village brothel run by his daughter, La Japonesita (Ana Martin) possibly conceived in a brief union with La Japonesa (Lucha Villa). The brothel and its town both suffer from neglect and delapidation; Don Fernando Soler co-stars as the wealthy Don Alejo who’s driven to own the entire town. When his daughter is threatened by truck driver Pancho (Gonzalo Vega), La Manuela steps in to distract him with an erotic dance in his/her best Flamenco dress. Pancho’s impassioned response leads to a haunting end for all concerned…
