William Shakespeare and the passion Orson Welles felt for Spain since his first visit in 1933 finally coincided in 1965. The pretext was the making of this film, whose origins are various versions of a theatrical work directed by the same man, bringing together fragments of Shakespeare’s plays: “Richard II”, “Henry IV” and “The Merry Wives of Windsor”, alongside the character of Richard Falstaff, created by Orson Welles.
Betrayal of friendship, rivalry between two opposing worlds and the ambition of power are three of the main themes in Welles’ work. It was filmed in Spain, though initially the location was going to be Yugoslavia, but the perseverance and enthusiasm of the producer Emiliano Piedra managed to secure its filming on Spanish soil, to maintain the integrity of the work.
Time has secured this film, and some of its sequences, particularly the battle scene, as some of the most emblematic in cinematic history, directed by one of cinema’s great masters.

El pretexto fue el rodaje de esta película cuyos orígenes se remontan a diversas versiones de un montaje teatral dirigido por el propio realizador, sintetizando fragmentos de diversas obras del dramaturgo británico- “Ricardo II”, “Enrique IV”, y “Las alegres comadres de Windsor”-, en torno al personaje de Sir John Falstaff, al que da vida Orson Welles.
La traición de la amistad, la contraposición entre dos mundos opuestos y la ambición de poder, tres de los temas cruciales en la obra de Welles, vertebran también el discurso de este film íntegramente filmado en tierras españolas, aunque las previsiones iniciales fueran hacerlos en Yugoslavia, pero la perseverancia y el entusiasmo del productor Emiliano Piedra retuvieron el proyecto en España.
El tiempo ha revalorizado con justicia los méritos de esta producción que contiene algunas de las secuencias, como la de la batalla, más emblemáticas de la filmografía de uno de los grandes maestros del cine.
