Nazarín, one of the undisputed works of Luis Buñuel, was his second film premiered in Cannes, which helped to establish the film and aided its international popularity. At the end of the 40’s, Luis Buñuel gained the rights to the novels of Benito Pérez Galdós, “Doña Perfecta” y “Nazarín” to recreate for the cinema.
The first series was released in the cinema a little after by Alejandro Galindo- one of the reasons for which Buñuel decided to temporarily shelve the material for Nazarín until a decade later (the other was the disastrous script developed by Pancho Cabrera).
With the collaboration of Julio Alejandro in a new script and the extraordinary creation of Paco Rabal as the father Nazario, Buñuel took the action of the novel by Galdós with the Mexican dictator Porfirio Díaz immediately after the revolution in 1911.
The change in scene does not modify the line presented of a traditional priest- a firm believer and practitioner of Christian compassion as all of his acts in favour of the fellow man in fact have tragic effects. Although they are not catastrophic, they cause serious conflicts within himself.
