A darkly amusing tale of jealousy and obsessive love, Deep Crimson, by leading Mexican filmmaker, Arturo Ripstein, explores the extreme passion which turn everyday people into violent monsters. Set in 1949 the film is based on the infamous Lonely Hearts murder case, which also inspired Leonard Kastle’s cult film, The Honeymoon Killers. When Coral, an overweight nurse, trawls the lonely hearts colums for a new lover, she meets Nico, a wig-wearing Charles Boyer look-a-like. But Nico is a fake who poses as a Spanish gentleman in order to prey on lonely women, including Coral. When she discovers his trickery, the obsessive and possessive Coral uses the information to her advantage and abandons her children in order to blackmail Nico into becoming her lover. With Coral posing as his sister, this unlikely couple join forces to exploit old, lonely widows and spinsters, robbing them of their fortunes. But their insecure love and extreme dependency lead to appalling acts of violence and ultimately towards a dramatic end.
