23-F. El día más difícil del Rey.

The 23rd of February 1981, which started as an ordinary day for Juan Carlos I, the King of Spain,  was to become in fact the worst moment  of all in the years of his young kingship. At 18:23 the Lt. Col. Tejero burst into the Parliament deteining the full session of parliament and holding the Government prisoner. It soon became clear that it was all about a “coup d’état”, but the protagonists of the coup said to act in the name of the King.
During the hours that followed the King had to put all his skills to work in order to demonstrate to the undecided Army Officers that he was not backing up the coup. The King and Sabino Fernández Campo, the Royal Household Secretary, ,had to face up the conspiracy and the treason of Alfonso Armada, the King’s best friend during 25 years and the real brains behind the operation.

El 23 de Febrero de 1981 se presentaba como un día más para el rey Juan Carlos I, pero iba a depararle el que sin duda fue el momento más difícil de su reciente reinado. Don Juan Carlos, junto al secretario de la Casa Real, Sabino Fernández Campo, se enfrenta a un complot y al dolor de ser traicionado por Alfonso Armada, su gran amigo de los últimos 25 años y verdadero cerebro detrás del golpe.

Fourteen kilometres is not only the distance separating Africa from Europe, it is also the boundary separating the dreams of millions of Africans who see the West as their only escape route from hunger and misery. Along with three young Africans – Violeta, Buba and Mukela- we make a long, dangerous journey through the Sahara to find out about things the media never show us. We have seen the television pictures of boats arriving on the Canary Island coast so often that we have grown hardened to a drama that is only the tip of the iceberg. La carta esférica

El club de los suicidas

A black comedy that tell us about the adventures of a group of men and women who meet each other in a therapy group for people who have attempted suicide run by the Government Health Service. All of them have tried to end their lives for different reasons and all of them have failed in their attempt. Everything changes when they get hold of an old edition of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel The suicide Club and they decide to set up their own club with an extremely simple objective; to kill each other. They meet one night a week to play cards and the one who wins has to die while the one who loses has to kill them within seven days. Now they find out that killing someone else is even more complicated that trying to kill themselves.

Whisky Romeo Zulú

Whisky Romeo Zulu narrates the days previous to the accident of the Boeing 737 from LAPA that caught fire after crashing against an enbankment at the heart of Buenos Aires, which caused the death of 67 people. Directed and played by an ex pilot of the same company, it reveals a plot of complicities between the Air Forces and the company to elude security controls for the sake of getting the biggest economic profit on the commercial flights.
A Federal Attorney starts to investigate, despite getting continuous threats and attacks, convinced that a tragedy of such a magnitude could not possibly be attributed to a pilot’s error. He eventually takes the company’s Board of Directors and the Air Forces Heads to court in a unique precedent in the History of commercial aviation.

Noticias de una guerra

El 1 de enero de 1936 se convocan elecciones generales en España. Es la segunda vez que las mujeres pueden votar. La campaña electoral muestra con claridad la diferencia entre las pasiones de la derecha y de la izquierda.

El 1 de febrero vota el 72 % del censo. Por estrecho margen, gana el Frente Popular. A partir de ese momento, las diferencias entre la izquierda y la derecha pasan con rapidez de las palabras a los hechos.

Muy pronto se pone en marcha la conspiración militar dirigida por el general Mola, que consigue la colaboración de los altos mandos que el Gobierno de la República ha desplazado a lugares periféricos: entre ellos, Franco, Calvo Sotelo y el teniente Castillo son asesinados.

El ‘Dragón Rapide’ vuela desde Londres para recoger a Franco. Las tropas del Norte de África se levantan. La guerra se hace imparable.

La educación de las hadas

One morning on a plane from Alicante to Barcelona, Nicolás meets both the woman of his dreems and the son he never had but has always longed for.

An isolated farmhouse in the mountains. A house which was the refuge for people who wanted to live an alternative lifestyle. They wanted to flee from the rules of society and set up a different system that would let them live freely.

This took place in the seventies. At the time when everyone young refused to be shackled by conventional society Max and his friends did up a house in the mountains and cut themselves off from the world.

Perhaps because of neglect, or maybe due to naivity things didn´t go according to plan. People gradually started leaving the house. The only one who decided to stay put and continue to live the alternative lifestyle was Max.

Una masía aislada en la montaña. Una casa que fue refugio de gente que quería hacer las cosas diferentes, de otra manera. Querían huir de los standards de la sociedad, y montar un sistema paralelo, que les permitiera vivir de una forma más libre.

Esto sucedió en los años 70, no ahora. En la época en la que todo joven quería vivir la vida de otro modo, Max y sus amigos se arreglaron una casa en la montaña y se aislaron del mundo.

Pero quizás por desidia, o por demasiada ingenuidad, la cosa no salió bien y todos los miembros de la comuna se fueron yendo de la casa poco a poco. El único que decidió quedarse y seguir viviendo del mismo modo fue Max.

Bienvenido a casa = Welcome home

Eva and Samuel are a young couple in love who have just moved in together. Samuel finds work as a photographer for a general interest magazine. There he meets his new colleagues: an attractive current events journalist, a calloused movie critic, an unusual financial reporter, a toughen sports reporter and a frustrated singer/songwriter who is in charge of the music section.

With the help of his his new colleagues, Samuel tries to overcome the difficulties of his coexistence with Eva and to remain in love with her. Always alert and protective, Samuel’s mother keeps an eye on things to prevent her son from repeating the same mistakes she believes she committed in the past. It is precisely the past that comes looking for Samuel when he bumps into Nieves, a childhood friend. However things start to complicate when Eva’s announces him that she is pregnant.

Ninette

Once again (Lullaby, The Luminous Wound, The Grandfather) José Luis Garci enters the theatre and looks at it through the film camera. On this occasion he does this from the romantic, amusing view point which a comedy such as Ninette requires.

Ninette is a reworking and film adaptation of two works (Ninette and the Gentleman from Murcia and Ninette, Paris Fashions) which Mihura dedicated to his favourite character, the intelligent, sexy, amusing and spontaneous Parisian girl who works in Galerias Lafayette and who, from now on, will always be remembered with the smile and figure of Elsa Pataky.

The film Ninette, produced by Nikel Odeon and PC29 is Garci´s homage to Miguel Mihura (1905-2005) one of the greatest humorists and dramatists of the twentieth century.

Una vez más (Canción de cuna, La herida luminosa, El Abuelo) José Luis Garci entra en el escenario teatral para mirarlo a través de la cámara de cine. En esta ocasión lo hace con la visión romántica y divertida que requiere una comedia como Ninette.

Five stories intertwine in a big city neighbourhood. The fear of illness or loneliness felt by Mariano and Conchi, two retired people living in the neighbourhood, the hope and sadness felt by Raquel, a middle-aged woman who experiences love over the Internet, the uncertain future of Cesar and Opo, two young people who work in the local supermarket, lead us through life in a working-class neighbourhood with a script full of tenderness, comedy and bitterness.

El miedo a la enfermedad o la soledad de Mariano y Conchi, dos jubilados del barrio, la esperanza y tristeza de Raquel, mujer de mediana edad que vive su amor vía internet, la incertidumbre del futuro de Cesar y Opo dos jóvenes que trabajan en el supermercado del barrio y que preparan sus vacaciones o el descubrimiento por parte de Lolo que hay algo más que su bar a través de su relación con Mao, su nuevo cocinero, nos conducen a través de la vida de un barrio de trabajadores en este guión lleno de ternura, comedia y amargura.

Luna de Avellaneda

Luna de Avellaneda is the story of an emblematic neighborhood social club: it used to be part of a splendor and finds itself today in the midst of a crisis that threatens its very existence. It would seem the only thing to do is to make it a casino, but nothing would negate as much its foundational values and the goals for which it was created in the 40’s: a social, sports and cultural club. The founders descendants will debate whether they should save themselves whatever the cost or meet again with those dreams.

“Luna de Avellaneda” es la historia de un emblemático club de barrio que ha vivido en el pasado una época de esplendor y que en la actualidad se encuentra inmerso en una crisis que pone en peligro su existencia como tal. Al parecer la única salida posible es que se convierta en un Casino, nada más alejado de los ideales y de los fines de sus fundadores en la década del 40: Un club social, deportivo y cultural. Los descendientes de estos fundadores se debatirán entre la posibilidad de salvarse a cualquier costo o de reencontrarse con aquellos sueños.

Diarios de motocicleta = The motorcycle diaries

In 1952, two Argentine youths, Ernesto Guevara, a medicine student and Alberto Granados, a biochemist, go on a road trip to discover the real Latin America.

The two friends leave Buenos Aires on a clapped out 500 cc Norton motorbike, urged on by the spirit of romantic adventure. When the motorbike breaks down, the travellers continue by hitchhiking and, little by little, they get to know a different Latin America.

These experiences turn them into the men they will become and who will shape their ethical and political life journey.

 En 1952, dos jóvenes argentinos, Ernesto Guevara estudiante de medicina y Alberto Granados, bioquímico, emprenden un viaje por carretera para descubrir la verdadera América Latina.

Los dos amigos dejan Buenos Aires en una desvencijada motocicleta Norton de 500 cc del año 1939, llevados por un romántico espíritu aventurero. Cuando la moto se avería, los viajeros prosiguen en auto-stop y poco a poco, irán conociendo una Latinoamérica diferente.

Sus experiencias hacen que despierten en ellos los hombres en que se convertirán en el futuro y que definirán el recorrido ético y político de sus vidas.
