The Basque country, one of the richest regions in Europe with only two million inhabitants, is considered by those who visit it to be a small paradise. But a terrible situation is hidden behind the mild climate, the beautiful scenery, and its high standard of living; for the last thirty years, more than two hundred thousand of its inhabitants have had to go into exile to save their lives, to escape from extortion, social isolation or nationalist impositions.

Pretextos

Xxy

Alex is a 15-year-old teenager with a secret. Three people meet one winter’s night at a bus stop and witness a dog being abandoned. Lucio

There always were and always will be a considerable number of anarchists in this world. Many of them have had to commit armed robbery or take part in smuggling but few have discussed strategy with Ché or helped Eldridge Cleaver, the leader of the Black Panthers. And there is only one who has done all this and has put the most important bank in the world against the ropes and all without missing a single day of his job as a construction worker. This man is Lucio Urtubia, from Cascante in Navarra. Lucio has now retired and lives in Paris. He managed to defraud the First National BanK (now Citibank) of 3,000 million pesetas of that time, to invest money in causes he believed in. Amazingly his “career” has only cost him one month in prison.

El Orfanato

A little girl named Laura has spent the best years of her childhood nurtured by an affectionate staff and surrounded by other orphans whom she loves like brothers and sisters. La Soledad

Separated, Adela leaves her small native village in the north of Leon and moves to Madrid with her year-old son. To pay her way, she finds a job as a hostess and moves into a flat with Carlos and Ines. The three hit it off immediately, sharing meals, doubts and their free time. Adela doesn’t find it particularly difficult to adapt to city life, despite not receiving much financial help from Miguelito’s father. En un pueblo marinero de Canarias, el odiado don Lucio fallece inesperadamente y su viuda no tiene espacio en su casa para velarlo. La vida abismal

1972. Ferran is a young boy with a tough life. He plays cards and occasionally has jobs. During a game he meets Chino – a player with a terrific presence. After a while they become friends. Games are a regular occurance and so Chino suggests that he make false money in order to join in.

Ferran goes to the best restaurants and the best gambling dens… He spends every night out. Chino suddenly disappears. Ferran spends a few weeks looking for him but nobody knows a thing.

1980. In a luxary mansion in Central Europe everybody has their eyes fixed on Chino… They hand him a pistol. He inserts in a bullet. He places the barrel in his mouth. He closes his eyes. A shot is heard.

 

1972. Ferran es un joven que malvive de trabajos esporádicos y de jugar a las cartas. En una partida conoce al Chino, un jugador con una presencia imponente. Se convierten en amigos. Las partidas se hacen muy frecuentes y el Chino le propone girarse letras falsas para tener efectivo para jugar.

Ferran frecuenta los mejores restaurantes, las mejores timbas… y la noche en toda su extensión. Pero el Chino desaparece, Ferran lo busca unas cuantas semanas pero nadie sabe nada de él.

1980. En una mansión lujosa centroeuropea, el Chino se sitúa bajo la atenta mirada de todo el mundo. Le ofrecen una pistola. Mete una bala. Reposa el cañon en su boca. Cierra los ojos. Suena un disparo.

Ficción

Alex, a film director, is trying to finish the script for his next film. With this in mind he decides to go away for a few days leaving his wife and children and staying in a friend’s house in a small mountain village. A quiet, lonely place which is just what he wants. There he meets Monica, a violinist on holiday…

Lo que sé de Lola

León is a lonely man who has no job and no friends. All he does is look after his sick mother and will do until her death. To break his solitude, Léon likes to steal his neighbours’ mail, to listen secretly to other people’s conversations, to follow the comings and goings of travellers at a small train station. One day, Dolores, a loud Spanish woman, moves to his neighbourhood and attracts Léon attention.

La educación de las hadas

One morning on a plane from Alicante to Barcelona, Nicolás meets both the woman of his dreems and the son he never had but has always longed for.

Don Quijote and Sancho ride in no particular direction looking for adventure. During the journey they philosophize about spirituality, knightly subjects, the right way to do something. Most importantly they secure their friendship.

Nominated for the Cannes Award 2006. Written, produced and directed by Albert Serra. Claimed by the French press as being the new ‘enfant terrible’ of Spanish cinema. With influences from Bresson, Godard, Ozu or Pasolini and by working with unknown amature actors the film has an almost mystic feel. It is shot completely in natural settings.

Un franco, 14 pesetas (Crossing the border)

Spain, 1960. Two friends, Martin and Marcos, decide to go to Switzerland in search of work. They leave their families in Spain and set out on a journey towards a new life in the Europe of progress and freedom.

Working as mechanics in a factory and living in a small industrial town, they encounter a completely different mentality.

The arrival of Pilar, Martin’s wife with their son Pablo and Mari Carmen, Marcos’s girlfriend, brings an end to their lives as single men in a country with so much freedom.

Martin and Pilar continue to work whilst little Pablo starts making friends at school. When Martin’s father dies they feel it is time to go home as they have achieved what they came in search of. However, they didn´t think that leaving would be so hard.

España 1960. Dos amigos, Martín y Marcos, deciden marcharse a Suiza en busca de trabajo. Dejan a sus familias en España y emprenden un viaje hacia una nueva vida en la Europa del progreso y las libertades.

Allí descubrirán una mentalidad muy diferente a la que deberán adaptarse, trabajando como mecánicos en una fábrica y viviendo en un pequeño pueblo industrial.

Con la llegada de Pilar, la mujer de Martín, con su hijo Pablo, y de Mari Carmen, la novia de Marcos, se les termina la vida de hombres solteros que llevaban en un país con tanta libertad.

El trabajo sigue siendo el día a día de Martín y Pilar, mientras el pequeño Pablo comienza a ir al colegio y a integrarse. Con la muerte del padre de Martín, se plantean que lo que habían ido a buscar ya lo han conseguido y es hora de regresar. Para su sorpresa, será más difícil la vuelta que la ida.

Aislados

Adrià, arrives at the port of Sant Antoni’s in Ibiza. Nobody has come to pick him up. He starts to look for the “French man’s house” in Santa Agnès, a small inland village where his friend Kike is waiting for him to come and spend the weekend.

During his stay in the house Adrià will discover something that could change his life.

La casa de mi abuela = My Grandmother’s house

 My Grandmother’s House looks at the peculiar relationship between Marina, an impulsive and disrespectful 6-year old girl, and Marita, her 75-year old grandmother. The old-fashioned upbringing imposed by the grandmother leads the girl to rebellion, not only against her but against everyone.

Over the years the family´s life is rebuilt leaving behind old emotions and conflicts.

 

La casa de mi abuela indaga en la peculiar relación que Marina, una niña de 6 años, impulsiva e irreverente, tiene con Marita, su abuela de 75 años. La rancia educación a la que la abuela somete a la niña, provoca que ésta se rebele no sólo contra ella, sino contra todo aquel que intente corregir su comportamiento.

A lo largo de varios años se reconstruye la vida y costumbre de una familia, dejando al descubierto emociones y conflictos.

Iluminados por el fuego = Enlightened by fire

Enlightened by Fire portrays the memories of 40-year-old Esteban Leguizamon. In 1982 he was sent to fight on Malvinas Islands as a conscript when he was only 18 years old. An ex-colleague’s attempted suicide triggers wartime memories, the times he shared with two young recruits: Vargas, who tried to commit suicide, and Juan, who died in combat.

He is reminded of not only the horrors of war, the suffering from the cold and hunger, but also the memories of friendship and camaraderie. From Esteban’s perspective we are shown how their lives become slowly entwined by the hand of death. Twenty years after the war Esteban decides to return to the Malvinas in order to confront his past and try to heal his open wounds.

Iluminados por el Fuego narra los recuerdos de Esteban Leguizamón, un hombre de 40 años que, en 1982, cuando tenía sólo 18, fue llevado como soldado recluta a combatir a las islas Malvinas. A partir del intento de suicidio de uno de sus ex compañeros, Esteban se sumerge en los recuerdos de esa guerra que compartió con otros dos jóvenes reclutas: Vargas, el suicida, y Juan, muerto en combate.

Allí aparecen no sólo los horrores propios de la guerra y el padecimiento del frío y del hambre, sino también las historias de amistad y compañerismo. Desde la mirada de Esteban, la película pone en evidencia la lenta y gradual inmersión de sus frágiles vidas en el corazón mismo de la muerte. A los 20 años de la guerra, Esteban decide volver a las Malvinas para reencontrarse con su pasado y cerrar sus viejas heridas.

Malas temporadas (Hard Times)

Set in the heart of Madrid, Malas temporadas (Hard Times) is the story of Mikel, Ana and Carlos; people whose lives become intertwined while they search for their place in the world.

Somewhere that keeps getting further away from the ideal, which itself does not exist, the only solution left is to start constructing a reality. For people whose fate has led them down unexpected roads they now share the need to reconsider the only options available to them.

Malas temporadas es la historia de Mikel, Ana y Carlos, enclavada en el corazón de Madrid. Personas que se relacionan mientras buscan su lugar en el mundo.

Un lugar que cada vez se aleja más del idealizado, del que no existe, y la única solución es partir de lo real, para empezar a construirlo. Gente a la que el destino ha terminado llevando por caminos inesperados. Ahora todos comparten la necesidad de replantearse sus opciones.

Obaba

Lourdes, scarcely 25 years old, begins on a trip towards Obaba’s territories. She is carrying a small video camera in her luggage. She wants to catch Obaba reality, its world and its people.

She wants to capture the present, and show it the way it is. But Obaba is not the place that Lurdes had imagined, and she discovers that the people who live there, like Merche, Ismael o Tomás, are trapped in a past that they can not –or they do not want to- escape from.

La Noche del Hermano

Jaime is a young man emerging from adolescence brutally shaken by the crime carried out by his older brother, Alex.

Jaime now lives at his grandfather’s house and has to start making decisions in an adult world he does not feel part of: whether to take on the still productive land he has inherited, whether to accept the purchase offer from land developers. In a word, to face life head-on.

Strong and dominating over the landscape of his brother’s consciousness, Alex shines a light like a beacon from jail demanding his share.

Han pasado las estaciones, Jaime es un joven saliendo de un despertar de juventud brutalmente sacudido por el asesinato que su hermano mayor, Álex, ha cometido.

Acogido en la casa de su abuelo paterno es ahora cuando Jaime ha de comenzar a tomar las decisiones para un mundo ante el que se encuentra ausente y desmotivado: hacerse cargo o no de la herencia de las tierras aún productivas y plantearse su futuro; en definitiva, encarar la vida.

Desde la cárcel Álex, como un faro en el paisaje de la conciencia, se proyecta sobre Jaime reclamando su parte.

“La Noche del Hermano” es un cuento en claroscuro en el que los sentimientos no siempre explícitos de sus personajes –y por ende sus motivaciones– son como el recorrido entre el día y la noche, el amor y el miedo, y en donde la vida no nos impresiona tanto por sus hechos como por su puesta en escena.

El cielo gira = The Sky Turns

In Aldeaseñor, a town in the province of Soria has only 14 inhabitants. They are the last generation after a thousand years of uninterupted history. Life goes on…in a short time it will die out without a sound and without witnesses.

The villagers and the painter Pello Azketa, have something in common: things have begun to dissapear before them. The narrator returns to his origin and tries to get back an original image, from childhood.

En Aldealseñor, un pueblo de los páramos altos de Soria, quedan hoy 14 habitantes. Son la última generación, después de mil años de historia ininterrumpida. Hoy, la vida continúa. Dentro de poco, se estinguirá sin estrépito y sin más testigos.

Los vecinos de la aldea y el trabajo del pintor Pello Azketa comparten algo en común: las cosas han empezado a desaparecer delante de ellos. La narradora vuelve a su origen y asiste a ese final al tiempo que intenta recuperar una imagen primera del mundo, de la infancia.

Frágil

Venus is 25, sweet, romantic and not very attractive. She lives with her stoic father in a remote Northern valley. Both work in the fields and produce honey. They have always had a good relationship, but it is completely devoid of even the slightest sign of affection.

When she was 9, a boy gave Venus her first and only kiss. The two of them swore their eternal love. Ever since, day after day, she has been waiting for his return.

One morning, she finds her father dead. Venus leaves home and sets out in search of her lost love. Not far from there, David, a young, magnetic and arrogant actor, waits for filming to start on a Hollywood superproduction,¨Dark Tale¨ in which he will be the star.

Soon David and Venus will meet, and she will feel that her search has finally ended… although the real world is not exactly like the fairytales she read as a child.

Venus tiene 25 años, es dulce, romántica y no muy atractiva. Ella vive con su estoico padre en un aislado valle del Norte. Ambos trabajan en las tareas del campo y fabrican miel de flores. Su relación siempre ha sido cordial pero absolutamente carente de cualquier muestra de cariño.

Cuando tenía 9 años, un niño dio a Venus su primer y unico beso, y los dos se juraron amor eterno. Desde ese momento, día tras día, ella espera en vano su regreso.

Pero una mañana el padre aparece muerto y Venus abandona por fin su hogar y sale en busca del amor perdido y de sus sueños. No muy lejos de allí, David, un actor joven, magnético y arrogante, aguarda el comienzo del rodaje de la superproducción de Hollywood de la que será protagonista, “Dark Tale”.

Pero la idea de empezar a ser deseado y querido por millones le tortura… porque le gusta más de lo que él quisiera. Pronto David y Venus se encontrarán y ella sentirá al fin que su búsqueda ha terminado… aunque el mundo real no es exactamente igual que los cuentos que ella leía de niña.
