El laberinto del fauno = Pan’s Labyrinth

In 1944, the fith year of peace, a thirteen-year-old girl, Ofelia, moves to a small village with her mother, Carmen who is in the last stages of pregnancy. Vidal, a cruel captain of the Francoist army and Carmen’s new husband is stationed in this village but Ofelia feels no affection whatsoever for this man. Vidal’s mission is to finish off the last traces of republican resistance hidden in the mountains of the region. Vidal’s centre of operations is also to be found here in a mill where Mercedes, a young girl in charge of the other members of the domestic staff and the doctor who will be in charge of Carmen in her delicate state of health are also waiting for them. One night Ofelia discovers the ruins of a labyrinth where she meets a faun, a strange creature who makes an incredible revelation. Ofelia is in fact a princess, the last of her line, and they have been waiting for her for a long time. To return to her magic kingdom, the girl must face three trials before the full moon.

Salvador Puig Antich

On 2 March 1974, the young militant of the Movimiento Ibérico de Liberación (Iberian Liberation Movement), Salvador Puig Antich, became the last political prisoner to be executed in Spain by strangulation.

This is his story and that of the desperate attempts of his family, friends and lawyers to prevent his execution.

El 2 de Marzo de 1974, el joven militante del Movimiento Ibérico de Liberación, Salvador Puig Antich, se convirtió en el último preso político ejecutado en España mediante “garrote vil”.

Ésta es su historia y la de los intentos desesperados de su familia, compañeros y abogados por evitar su ejecución.

Alatriste = Captain Alatriste

In seventeenth century Imperial Spain, Diego Alatriste, a brave soldier in his majesty’s service, is fighting in a war in the cold lands of Flanders. In a Dutch ambush Balboa, a friend and comrade-in-arms is fatally wounded. From the lips of his friend Alatriste hears his last request and promises it will be satisfied. Balboa asks him to look after his son, Iñigo, and keep him away from becoming a soldier.

Alatriste himself, who barely gets by selling his swordsmanship, finds himself involved in one of these intrigues when he is taken on together with another mercenary, the Italian Gualterio Malatesta, to kill two mysterious characters who are travelling incognito to Madrid .

España Imperial, siglo XVII. Diego Alatriste, valeroso soldado al servicio de su majestad, combate en una guerra en las frías tierras de Flandes. En una emboscada de los holandeses, Balboa, amigo y compañero de armas, cae herido de muerte. El propio Alatriste, que malvive vendiendo su espada, se verá implicado en una de estas intrigas cuando es contratado junto a otro mercenario, el italiano Gualterio Malatesta, para dar muerte a dos misteriosos personajes que viajan de incógnito a Madrid…

Aguaviva

Aguaviva, a small town in Teruel, has been depopulating. In order to put an end to this, its mayor made an international call to families willing to emigrate and settle in the town, in exchange for work and a residence.

With this starting point, the film brings together the existences of the newly-arrived immigrants and of the rural community that welcomes them. “Aguaviva” fuses the tensions that come about when two groups, who willingly integrate themselves and come to live together. The film goes into how the new inhabitants assimilate the process of integration and how the locals perceive the arrival of foreigners with different ways of seeing and experiencing life. During the course of the year, the passing of the seasons marks the development of the main characters, who are going to become involved in a psychological mesh that affects a human landscape that had been unbreachable until then.

Aguaviva, una pequeña localidad de Teruel, se estaba despoblando. Para evitarlo, su alcalde hizo un llamamiento internacional a familias dispuestas a emigrar e instalarse en el pueblo a cambio de trabajo y vivienda.

 Con este punto de partida, la película recoge las vivencias de los inmigrantes recién llegados y de la comunidad rural que los acoge. Siempre desde un prisma emocional, “Aguaviva” plasma las tensiones que desencadena la convivencia entre dos grupos cuya fusión no se revela fácil. La película profundiza en cómo los nuevos habitantes asimilan el proceso de integración y cómo los lugareños perciben la llegada de forasteros con maneras diferentes de ver y sentir la vida. A lo largo de un año, el paso de las estaciones va marcando la evolución de los protagonistas, quienes se ven envueltos en un entramado psicológico que altera un paisaje humano hasta entonces infranqueable.

Cineastes en acción = Cineastas en acción

This film looks into the trials held in Paris, Copenhagen and Stockholm in defence of the moral rights of the filmmakers John Huston, Sydney Pollack and Vilgot Sjoman, for cases of electronic colouring, panning-scanning and commercial breaks in television.

Other sequences show children watching “Fort Apache” by John Ford in the fifties to introduce the subject of dubbing and a situation at the Vatican in the fifteenth century concludes a report by Jules Dassin on the new censorship invented by companies such as MovieMask.

It also deals with issues related to the Final Cut and the first meeting held in 1956 in Paris by filmmakers from all over the world to defend their rights.

La película profundiza en los juicios celebrados en París, Copenhague y Estocolmo en defensa de los derechos morales de los cineastas John Huston, Sydney Pollack y Vilgot Sjoman, por casos de coloreado electrónico, panning-scanning e interrupciones publicitarias en televisión.

Otras secuencias muestran a unos niños viendo “Fort Apache” de John Ford en los años cincuenta para introducir el tema del doblaje y una situación en el Vaticano del siglo XV es la conclusión al informe de Jules Dassin sobre la nueva censura inventada por compañías como MovieMask.

También se tratan temas relacionados con el “Final Cut” y se recrea la primera reunión que tuvieron cineastas del mundo entero en 1956 en París para defender sus derechos.

Tu vida en 65′ (Tu vida en 65 minutos)

One Sunday, three young friends are reading the obituary for someone they thought to be a schoolmate they had lost touch with a long time ago. They go to the morgue and realize that they have made a mistake and that the funeral is not for their school friend.

From this point confusion and fate weave a tale of friendship, love and death.

La bicicleta = The bicycle

A bike which has had several owners tells us three different stories. Each story represents a different stage of life: childhood, youth and old age.

Twelve-year-old Ramón goes to an old bicycle shop to fix his puncture where he meets an old man called Mario. Julia, a 20 year old girl who has left her small town to move to the city to study Chinese, find a job as a bicycle courier. Through this job she has got to know Aurora with whom she leaves her bike when she goes on holiday.

One day while she is scraping paint from the bicycle, Aurora stumbles upon the name and address of a bike shop. Here she meets Mario.

Una misma bicicleta que pasa por diferentes manos sirve para contar tres historias que corresponden a tres etapas en la vida de las personas: la pre-adolescencia, la juventud y la ancianidad.

Ramón, un niño de doce años, visita un viejo taller de bicicletas para arreglar un pinchazo. Allí se encuentra con un anciano llamado Mario. Julia, una chica de 20 años que ha dejado el pueblo para estudiar chino en la ciudad, encuentra un trabajo como bici-mensajera, gracias a este trabajo conoce a Aurora. Julia le deja su bicicleta a Aurora cuando se marcha de vacaciones.

Un día rascando la pintura del cuadro, Aurora lee una chapa donde está escrito el nombre y la dirección del taller de la bicicleta y encuentra a Mario…

Amor en defensa propia = Love in Self Defence

The last chance for two people who have wandered aimlessly through life. Together they’ve been through three divorces; she has a son she never sees and says she’s a painter; he’s a retired footballer who makes a living by ripping off fools with emotional problems. Both of them are in their forties but neither of them has done anything great with their lives. Rubén and Adriana have just met, by chance, in a bar. He lies. She hides the truth. After the feeling of love at first sight, when they try to start a relationship, they both find it hard to unravel their pasts, their mistakes and their lies.

Un franco, 14 pesetas (Crossing the border)

Spain, 1960. Two friends, Martin and Marcos, decide to go to Switzerland in search of work. They leave their families in Spain and set out on a journey towards a new life in the Europe of progress and freedom.

Working as mechanics in a factory and living in a small industrial town, they encounter a completely different mentality.

The arrival of Pilar, Martin’s wife with their son Pablo and Mari Carmen, Marcos’s girlfriend, brings an end to their lives as single men in a country with so much freedom.

Martin and Pilar continue to work whilst little Pablo starts making friends at school. When Martin’s father dies they feel it is time to go home as they have achieved what they came in search of. However, they didn´t think that leaving would be so hard.

España 1960. Dos amigos, Martín y Marcos, deciden marcharse a Suiza en busca de trabajo. Dejan a sus familias en España y emprenden un viaje hacia una nueva vida en la Europa del progreso y las libertades.

Allí descubrirán una mentalidad muy diferente a la que deberán adaptarse, trabajando como mecánicos en una fábrica y viviendo en un pequeño pueblo industrial.

Con la llegada de Pilar, la mujer de Martín, con su hijo Pablo, y de Mari Carmen, la novia de Marcos, se les termina la vida de hombres solteros que llevaban en un país con tanta libertad.

El trabajo sigue siendo el día a día de Martín y Pilar, mientras el pequeño Pablo comienza a ir al colegio y a integrarse. Con la muerte del padre de Martín, se plantean que lo que habían ido a buscar ya lo han conseguido y es hora de regresar. Para su sorpresa, será más difícil la vuelta que la ida.

La gran final (The great match)

How is it that even children who live in the remostest areas of the Mongolian mountains know who Ronaldo is?

“The great match” is a comedy that tells us, through three parallel stories, about the adventures of several groups who have two things in common; they live in remote regions of the planet and they are determined to see the final of the Japan-Korea 2002 football world cup between Germany and Brazil.

The unexpected football fans include: a nomadic Mongolian family, a Tuareg camel caravan in the Sahara desert and a group of Amazon Indians.

All of them either live many far away from the nearest place where it is possible to watch television or there are many difficulties for them to get there. However, these men have the willpower and determination to succeed.

¿Cómo es posible que en lo más recóndito de las estepas mongolas los niños sepan quién es Ronaldo? “La Gran Final” es una comedia que cuenta, a través de tres historias paralelas, las peripecias de unos hombres que tienen dos cosas en común: vivir en regiones remotas del planeta y estar empeñados en ver la final de la copa del mundo de fútbol Japón-Corea 2002 entre Alemania y Brasil.

Una familia de nómadas mongoles, una caravana de camelleros tuareg en el desierto del Sáhara y un grupo de indios amazónicos serán nuestros protagonistas.

Todos viven a muchos kilómetros de distancia del punto más cercano en el que es posible ver la televisión o son múltiples las dificultades que tienen para hacerlo. Sin embargo, estos hombres disponen del ingenio y la voluntad suficiente como para lograr su objetivo.

Sumas y restas = Addictions and subtractions

Medellín, Colombia, at the height of the drug cartels. Santiago, a married middle-class engineer from a good family has serious financial problems.

Through a childhood friend he meets Gerardo the owner of a mechanics yard and a “traqueto”, or drug dealer. Fascinated by the atmosphere of decadent parties, drugs and easy women, Santiago finds himself trapped in a whirlwind of easy money, drug dealing and hired killers.

Little by little his professional and family life become affected, until he starts to drown in a wave of violence with no escape.

Medellín, Colombia, en pleno apogeo de los “carteles” de la droga. Santiago, ingeniero de clase media, casado y de buena familia, tiene serios problemas financieros.

A través de un amigo de la infancia conocerá a Gerardo, dueño de un taller mecánico y “traqueto” (traficante de cocaína). Fascinado por el ambiente de fiestas decadentes, droga y mujeres fáciles, Santiago se verá atrapado en una vorágine de lucro rápido, narcotraficantes y sicarios. Poco a poco, su situación familiar y profesional se irá deteriorando, hasta verse esclavo de una espiral de violencia sin salida.

Azul oscuro casi negro (Azuloscurocasinegro) = Dark Blue Almost Black

DarkBlueAlmostBlack is a state of mind, an uncertain future, a colour: a colour that we don’t always recognize and which varies depending on the light, the medium and the mood.

After his father suffers a stroke, Jorge is forced to take over his job. He has spent the last few years working hard, caring for his father and finishing college, but now he wants to strike out on his own.

Through his brother Antonio, he meets Paula, a woman with whom he develops an unusual relationship. Through her, Jorge learns to stop feeling responsible for everything and finally confront his own wishes, ignoring what the world expects of him. Everything should change for Jorge as a result… but it may not.

Three generations of women who are survivors of the easterly wind, fire, madness, superstition, being rewarded for living a good life by death, lies and a have a continuous joi de vivre.

They are: Raimunda, married to an unemployed labourer and her teenage daughter, Sole, her sister, who earns her living as hairdresser and their mother, who died with her husband in a fire. She appears as an apparition first to her sister and then to Sole, even though she had unsettled business with Raimunda and her neighbour, Agustina.

‘Volver’ is not a surreal comedy, though it might seem so at times. The living and the dead live together without problems. They provoke both hilarious situations and others full of deep emotion. “It is a film about the culture of death in my native region, La Mancha. The folk who reside there live simply. The way in which they treat the dead and the sense of humanity mean that the dead never really die.”.

Volver shatters all clichés of a dark Spain and shows a country that is as real as it is contrary. A white Spain, spontaneous, fun, fearless, fair and untied.

Tres generaciones de mujeres sobreviven al viento solano, al fuego, a la locura, a la superstición e incluso a la muerte a base de bondad, mentiras y una vitalidad sin límites.

Ellas son Raimunda casada con un obrero en paro y una hija adolescente. Sole, su hermana, que se gana la vida como peluquera. Y la madre de ambas, muerta en un incendio junto a su marido. Este personaje se aparece primero a su hermana y después a Sole, aunque con quien dejó importantes asuntos pendientes fue con Raimunda y con su vecina del pueblo, Agustina.

Volver no es una comedia surrealista, aunque en ocasiones lo parezca. Vivos y muertos conviven sin estridencias, provocando situaciones hilarantes o de una emoción intensa y genuina. “Es una película sobre la cultura de la muerte en mi Mancha natal. Mis paisanos la viven con una naturalidad admirable. El modo en que los muertos continúan presentes en sus vidas, la riqueza y humanidad de sus ritos hace que los muertos no mueran nunca”.

Volver destruye los tópicos de la España negra y propone una España tan real como opuesta. Una España blanca, espontánea, divertida, intrépida, solidaria y justa.

La fiesta del Chivo = The Feast of the Goat

Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), 1992. Urania Cabral returns to her hometown. She can barely recognize the old man lying dumb in his bed. He is motionless and almost inert. It is her father, Agustin Cabral, alias “Egghead”, President of the Senate and for many years right hand man of the dictator, Trujillo. That is until he fell into disgrace.

That was a long time ago, however Urania still remembers it 35 years later. She talks with her aunt and cousins who don´t understand why she hasn´t visited them or even her own father for so many years.

Finally, she will confess the terrible secret that will never allow her to move back from her homeland and family. A secret that has ruined her life. The Feast of the Goat is also a story of the men who sacrificed their lives to end one of the bloodiest tyrannies of contemporary Latin American history.

Santo Domingo (República Dominicana), 1992. Urania Cabral regresa a su ciudad natal. Apenas reconoce a ese viejo decrépito, mudo e inmóvil casi inerte. Es su padre, Agustin Cabral, alias “Cerebrito” Presidente del Senado y mano derecha del dictador Trujillo durante muchos, muchos años. Hasta que cayó en desgracia.

Pero de aquello ha pasado mucho tiempo. Todo ello lo recuerda Urania 35 años después. Se lo cuenta a su tía y a sus primas, que no entienden porqué ha estado tanto tiempo sin ir a verlas, a ellas y a su propio padre.

Finalmente, ella confesará el terrible secreto que la llevó a alejarse para siempre de su hogar y su familia, un secreto que destrozó su vida para siempre. La fiesta del Chivo es también la historia de unos hombres que dieron su vida para acabar con una de las tiranías más sangrientas de la historia reciente de América Latina.

El Rey

Colombia at the end of the sixties. Pedro Rey is a petty bandit in partnership with Harry, a North American who works for the Peace Core. He works out ways of smuggling cocaine to the United States.

Business is growing and Rey, blinded by ambition, dreams of having his own drug emporium. Colombia´s first multinational business.

“El Rey” emerged as a documentary project that would go into the origins of drug smuggling in depth and its gangsters. Then, it turned into a fiction film for which part of the investigation was useful, especially for two reasons: finding locations that were original settings and finding extras for the film that were actually involved in that world.

The main character himself is inspired by a local who was the first great legend at the begining of Colombian drug-trafficing history. More than 5000 people attended his enormous funeral.

Colombia, finales de los 60. Pedro Rey, un bandido de poca monta, en alianza con Harry, norteamericano que trabaja para los Cuerpos de Paz, se ingenia mecanismos para procesar cocaína y llevarla a Estados Unidos.

El negocio crece  y Rey, cegado por la ambición, sueña con hacer del negocio del narcotráfico la primera “empresa multinacional” colombiana.

El Rey surgió como un proyecto documental que profundizase en los orígenes del narcotráfico y sus primeros capos. Convertido en film de ficción, parte del trabajo de investigación fue muy útil tanto en la utilización de localizaciones que habían sido escenarios originales de los hechos como en la aparición de extras que vivieron y forjaron la historia.

El propio protagonista está inspirado en un personaje local que fue el primer gran mito de los inicios del narcotráfico colombiano a cuyo apoteósico sepelio asistieron más de 5000 personas.

Iluminados por el fuego = Enlightened by fire

Enlightened by Fire portrays the memories of 40-year-old Esteban Leguizamon. In 1982 he was sent to fight on Malvinas Islands as a conscript when he was only 18 years old. An ex-colleague’s attempted suicide triggers wartime memories, the times he shared with two young recruits: Vargas, who tried to commit suicide, and Juan, who died in combat.

He is reminded of not only the horrors of war, the suffering from the cold and hunger, but also the memories of friendship and camaraderie. From Esteban’s perspective we are shown how their lives become slowly entwined by the hand of death. Twenty years after the war Esteban decides to return to the Malvinas in order to confront his past and try to heal his open wounds.

Iluminados por el Fuego narra los recuerdos de Esteban Leguizamón, un hombre de 40 años que, en 1982, cuando tenía sólo 18, fue llevado como soldado recluta a combatir a las islas Malvinas. A partir del intento de suicidio de uno de sus ex compañeros, Esteban se sumerge en los recuerdos de esa guerra que compartió con otros dos jóvenes reclutas: Vargas, el suicida, y Juan, muerto en combate.

Allí aparecen no sólo los horrores propios de la guerra y el padecimiento del frío y del hambre, sino también las historias de amistad y compañerismo. Desde la mirada de Esteban, la película pone en evidencia la lenta y gradual inmersión de sus frágiles vidas en el corazón mismo de la muerte. A los 20 años de la guerra, Esteban decide volver a las Malvinas para reencontrarse con su pasado y cerrar sus viejas heridas.

Veinte años no es nada

“Veinte años no es nada” reconstructs the last 25 years of Spanish history from the view point of the workers of the self managed experience of the Numax Factory at the end of the seventies.

These images, together with the worker´s situation 30 years after makes us reflect on the last intense decades that we have lived through.

La experiencia autogestionaria de los trabajadores de la fábrica Numax a finales de los años 70 quedó recogida en un documental que ellos mismos decidieron realizar y que encargaron a Joaquín Jordá en el momento en que estaban a punto de cerrar.

Aquellas imágenes recuperadas, junto con la situación de estos trabajadores 30 años después nos llevan a reflexionar sobre las últimas e intensas decadas que nos han tocado vivir.

Malas temporadas (Hard Times)

Men, women and children, some murdered indiscriminately others after suffering cruel persecution, make up the thirteen stories in this documentary. They are a small representation of the large group of people affected by terrorism in our country. Above all this is the physical embodiment of the limitless pain which arises from the injustice of murder and the lack of social solidarity.

El Aura

“The Aura” tells in the first person the extraordinary trip of a character with no name, a taxidermist, an introverted, obscure man who has a strange obsession for an honest man: again and again over recent years, he has planned and imagined the most perfectly executed robberies.

They’re always successful – thanks to his intelligence which, he claims, marks him apart from the idiots-fighting-idiots struggle of cops and robbers. He could carry it off better than anybody else.

Taken away from his urban habitat and transported to the remote forests of the south to take part in a day’s hunting, a tragic accident unexpectedly gives him the chance to commit a real crime: an attack on an armored security truck carrying the takings from a nearby casino.

Motivated at first by morbid curiosity, and then carried along by the momentum of events, this taxidermist will be hurled right into his fantasies, and compelled to assemble, piece by piece, a complex jigsaw puzzle of events which will slowly trap him inescapably.

Frágiles = Fragile

The Mercy Falls Children’s Hospital is about to close its doors for good after more than a century of service. Most of the personnel has left and practically all the installations have already been dismantled.

Amy, an American nurse, is sent to Mercy Falls to cover the night shift while the last of the children are moved to other hospitals. But she soon detects something odd in this place. The children are nervous and afraid and they talk of something intangible, invisible, something that shouldn’t even exist, something full of pain and hatred.

The Magicians takes us to a school in Sant Juliá de Vilatorta, where in 1937, in the midst of the civil war, a clandestine film maker and orphaned children disguised as sultans and explorers shot an exotic adventure film.

The stars of this film re-live those days of their childhood when they could exchange their school uniforms for oriental turbans while reality impossed its own fancy dress ball with military uniforms and priests in civvies.

La doble vida del Faquir regresa al escenario de un colegio de Sant Julià de Vilatorta donde el año 1937, en plena guerra civil, un cineasta en la clandestinidad y niños huérfanos disfrazados de sultanes y exploradores rodaron una exótica película de aventuras.

Sus protagonistas reviven aquellos días de la infancia cuando pudieron cambiar las batas por turbantes orientales mientras la realidad imponía su propio baile de disfraces con uniformes militares y curas vestidos de paisano.
