Matiné 1927

Tomás Camarillo, filmaker and photographer from Guadalajara, shot a series of documentaries between 1927 and 1930, which are the most important cinematographic footage shot before the Civil War in Castilla-La Mancha. Delta films has edit them together allowing us to view the work of this spanish film pioneer for the first time.

Let’s enter the time machine and be transported to a world of customs that no longer exist, where the images of the past comet to life before our eyes.

Bucarest: La memoria perdida.

“Bucharest” is a documentary about memory. From within a double exile, it follows the personal pursuit of Albert (a journalist born in exile in 1962) to recuperate his own roots. His father, the Spanish politician Jordi Solé Tura, who became a key figure during the Spanish Transition, was obliged to go into exile toward the end of the 1950s for his militant anti-Franco beliefs. Now, after living a life replete with passionate personal and political experiences, Jordi has begun to enter a new, internal exile, this time with no possibility of returning: a fight against Alzheimer’s Disease. Every day, his memory slips further away.With this film, Albert will resurrect the memory not only of his father’s atypical life, but also that of other historical Spanish figures such as Santiago Carrillo, Felipe González, Jorge Semprún and the ex-president of Catalonia Jordi Pujol, and little known episodes in the fight against Franco’s dictatorship and the Cold War. For Albert, many of these experiences are the diffuse recollections of a child. He will travel from one exile to another, trying to recompose the memory of his family, his own memory.

Narra la búsqueda personal que hace Albert (un periodista nacido en el exilio en 1962) por recuperar sus propias raíces, enmarcadas entre un doble exilio. Su padre, el político español Jordi Solé Tura, uno de los padres de la Constitución, vivió exiliado por su militancia antifranquista a finales de los años 50. Ahora, después de haber vivido una vida repleta de apasionantes experiencias personales y políticas, Jordi ha comenzado a entrar en un nuevo, exilio interior, esta vez sin posibilidades de retorno: una lucha contra el Alzheimer. Cada día su memoria se pierde un poco más. Con esta película, Alberto resucitará la memoria no sólo de la vida atípica de su padre sino también de otras figuras históricas españolas, como Santiago Carrillo, Felipe González, Jorge Semprún y el expresidente de Cataluña Jordi Pujol, y pequeños episodios desconocidos de la lucha contra la dictadura de Franco y la Guerra Fría. 14 kilómetros

Fourteen kilometres is not only the distance separating Africa from Europe, it is also the boundary separating the dreams of millions of Africans who see the West as their only escape route from hunger and misery. Along with three young Africans – Violeta, Buba and Mukela- we make a long, dangerous journey through the Sahara to find out about things the media never show us. We have seen the television pictures of boats arriving on the Canary Island coast so often that we have grown hardened to a drama that is only the tip of the iceberg. These pictures of exhausted faces are ample proof of the gruelling journey that begins thousands of kilometres away and may last for years.

Catorce kilómetros es la distancia que separa África de Europa, pero también es la barrera que separa los sueños de millones de africanos que ven en Occidente su única salida para escapar del hambre y de la miseria. De la mano de tres jóvenes africanos -Violeta, Buba y Mukela- recorreremos un largo y peligroso viaje a través del Sahara para conocer lo que nunca enseñan los medios de comunicación. Las repetidas imágenes en televisión de cayucos llegando a las costas de Canarias han acabado por insensibilizarnos ante un drama que solo muestra la punta del iceberg. Esas imágenes de rostros exhaustos dan buena fe de la dureza del viaje, un viaje que tiene su origen a miles de kilómetros de distancia y que puede durar años. Y esto es lo que pretende “14 kilómetros”. Esta película quiere ser un homenaje a los que triunfaron y a los que fracasaron, a los que viven y a los que murieron en el empeño. Para todos ellos nuestra admiración y respeto.

Lucio

There always were and always will be a considerable number of anarchists in this world. Many of them have had to commit armed robbery or take part in smuggling but few have discussed strategy with Ché or helped Eldridge Cleaver, the leader of the Black Panthers. And there is only one who has done all this and has put the most important bank in the world against the ropes and all without missing a single day of his job as a construction worker. This man is Lucio Urtubia, from Cascante in Navarra. Lucio has now retired and lives in Paris. He managed to defraud the First National BanK (now Citibank) of 3,000 million pesetas of that time, to invest money in causes he believed in. Amazingly his “career” has only cost him one month in prison.

Los que unido a todo lo anterior, hayan conseguido poner contra las cuerdas al banco más poderoso del planeta mediante la falsificación masiva de traveller checks, y sin faltar un solo día a su trabajo de albañil de construcción, sólo hay uno. Lucio Urtubia, hijo de Cascante (Navarra). Lucio, hoy en día, vive en Paris, retirado. Consiguió estafar al First National Bank (ahora Citibank) 3.000 millones de pesetas de la época, para invertir el dinero en causas en las que creía. Septiembres

 Every September, Madrid’s Soto del Real Prison celebrates the Festival of Song. The participants are inmates who come from various prisons. They are the protagonists of the film. The festival is simply a point of departure. From there, these four men and four women return to their daily routines in prison and allow us to enter into their lives and the intimacy of their relationships. Love, or its absence, serves as the common language to enable the spectator to understand the world of the penitentiary from a perspective we can all relate to. Spanning a year—from September to September, between one festival and the next—the film portrays their love stories: how they develop or how they fall apart.

Cada septiembre , la prisión de Soto del Real, en Madrid, celebra el Festival de la Canción. Los participantes son reclusos venidos de distintas prisiones, y ellos son los protagonistas de la película. El festival es sólo el punto de partida, a partir de ahí cuatro hombres y cuatro mujeres regresan a su turina carcelaria y nos permiten entrar en sus vidas y en la intimidad de sus relaciones de amor.

 

El amor (o su ausencia) sirve de lenguaje común para que el espectador entienda el mundo de la cárcel desde una óptica que a todos nos resulta próxima. A lo largo de un año, es decir de septiembre a septiembre, entre festival y festival, la película retrata sus historias de amor, cómo se desarrollan o cómo se desintegran.

Noticias de una guerra

El 1 de enero de 1936 se convocan elecciones generales en España. Es la segunda vez que las mujeres pueden votar. La campaña electoral muestra con claridad la diferencia entre las pasiones de la derecha y de la izquierda.

El 1 de febrero vota el 72 % del censo. Por estrecho margen, gana el Frente Popular. A partir de ese momento, las diferencias entre la izquierda y la derecha pasan con rapidez de las palabras a los hechos.

Muy pronto se pone en marcha la conspiración militar dirigida por el general Mola, que consigue la colaboración de los altos mandos que el Gobierno de la República ha desplazado a lugares periféricos: entre ellos, Franco, Calvo Sotelo y el teniente Castillo son asesinados.

El ‘Dragón Rapide’ vuela desde Londres para recoger a Franco. Las tropas del Norte de África se levantan. La guerra se hace imparable.

Lorca, el mar deja de moverse = Lorca, the sea stops still

“The sea stops still” is the definition Lorca gave to murder in a verse of “Poet in New York”. This documentary analyses the last hours of the poet Federico García Lorca and the political and family conspiracy which ended in his murder carried out in the repressive, bloody Granada of 1936.

For the first time, the full names of those guilty of such a sinister crime are revealed. Using the research carried out by the historian Ian Gibson in the seventies and eighties as a base, the researchers from Granada Miguel Caballero and Pilar Góngora have spent several years searching documents in archives, inaccessible for many years, and have collected oral testimonies from people present or near to the events.

Their conclusions are the common thread of this film that has been enriched by the research work of Emilio Ruiz Barrachina the film’s director.

“El mar deja de moverse” es la definición que Lorca da sobre el asesinato en un verso de “Poeta en Nueva York”. Este documental analiza las últimas horas del poeta Federico García Lorca y la trama política y familiar que concluyó con su asesinato, perpetrado en la represiva y sangrienta Granada de 1936.

Por primera vez se descubre, con nombres y apellidos, a los culpables de tan siniestro crimen. Teniendo como base las investigaciones del historiador Ian Gibson de los años 70 y 80, los investigadores granadinos Miguel Caballero y Pilar Góngora han dedicado varios años a la búsqueda de documentos de archivo, inaccesibles durante muchos años, y a recabar testimonios orales de personas presentes o cercanas a los hechos.

Sus conclusiones son el hilo conductor de esta película que se ha enriquecido con el trabajo de investigación del propio director, Emilio Ruiz Barrachina.

Aguaviva

Aguaviva, a small town in Teruel, has been depopulating. In order to put an end to this, its mayor made an international call to families willing to emigrate and settle in the town, in exchange for work and a residence.

With this starting point, the film brings together the existences of the newly-arrived immigrants and of the rural community that welcomes them. “Aguaviva” fuses the tensions that come about when two groups, who willingly integrate themselves and come to live together. The film goes into how the new inhabitants assimilate the process of integration and how the locals perceive the arrival of foreigners with different ways of seeing and experiencing life. During the course of the year, the passing of the seasons marks the development of the main characters, who are going to become involved in a psychological mesh that affects a human landscape that had been unbreachable until then.

Aguaviva, una pequeña localidad de Teruel, se estaba despoblando. Para evitarlo, su alcalde hizo un llamamiento internacional a familias dispuestas a emigrar e instalarse en el pueblo a cambio de trabajo y vivienda.

 Con este punto de partida, la película recoge las vivencias de los inmigrantes recién llegados y de la comunidad rural que los acoge. Siempre desde un prisma emocional, “Aguaviva” plasma las tensiones que desencadena la convivencia entre dos grupos cuya fusión no se revela fácil. La película profundiza en cómo los nuevos habitantes asimilan el proceso de integración y cómo los lugareños perciben la llegada de forasteros con maneras diferentes de ver y sentir la vida. A lo largo de un año, el paso de las estaciones va marcando la evolución de los protagonistas, quienes se ven envueltos en un entramado psicológico que altera un paisaje humano hasta entonces infranqueable.

This film looks into the trials held in Paris, Copenhagen and Stockholm in defence of the moral rights of the filmmakers John Huston, Sydney Pollack and Vilgot Sjoman, for cases of electronic colouring, panning-scanning and commercial breaks in television.

Other sequences show children watching “Fort Apache” by John Ford in the fifties to introduce the subject of dubbing and a situation at the Vatican in the fifteenth century concludes a report by Jules Dassin on the new censorship invented by companies such as MovieMask.

It also deals with issues related to the Final Cut and the first meeting held in 1956 in Paris by filmmakers from all over the world to defend their rights.

La película profundiza en los juicios celebrados en París, Copenhague y Estocolmo en defensa de los derechos morales de los cineastas John Huston, Sydney Pollack y Vilgot Sjoman, por casos de coloreado electrónico, panning-scanning e interrupciones publicitarias en televisión.

Otras secuencias muestran a unos niños viendo “Fort Apache” de John Ford en los años cincuenta para introducir el tema del doblaje y una situación en el Vaticano del siglo XV es la conclusión al informe de Jules Dassin sobre la nueva censura inventada por compañías como MovieMask.

También se tratan temas relacionados con el “Final Cut” y se recrea la primera reunión que tuvieron cineastas del mundo entero en 1956 en París para defender sus derechos.

La piel vendida

Pornographic films have gone from being a product bought furtively to being sold in newsagents with the daily press. “Sold skin” tries to open a window on a kind of filmmaking which we have all seen but know little about. It hopes to do this through the main characters from an everyday point of view.

The actors, actresses, directors, producers give us an insight to their profession. They tell us the cinema´s most intricate details where, precisely because the images and content are so explicit, both the actor´s and viewer´s motivations remain hidden.

El cine pornográfico ha pasado de ser un producto comprado a hurtadillas, a venderse en los quioscos con la prensa diaria. “La piel vendida” pretende abrir una ventana a un cine que todos hemos visto pero que casi nadie conoce, y lo quiere hacer -desde la cotidianidad- a través de sus protagonistas.

Sus actores, actrices, directores, productores… nos cuentan su profesión desde las luces y las sombras de un cine que a fuerza de ser explicito en sus imágenes y temáticas, permanece oculto en sus motivaciones: las del espectador y las de sus protagonistas.

La casa de mi abuela = My Grandmother’s house

 My Grandmother’s House looks at the peculiar relationship between Marina, an impulsive and disrespectful 6-year old girl, and Marita, her 75-year old grandmother. The old-fashioned upbringing imposed by the grandmother leads the girl to rebellion, not only against her but against everyone.

Over the years the family´s life is rebuilt leaving behind old emotions and conflicts.

 

La casa de mi abuela indaga en la peculiar relación que Marina, una niña de 6 años, impulsiva e irreverente, tiene con Marita, su abuela de 75 años. La rancia educación a la que la abuela somete a la niña, provoca que ésta se rebele no sólo contra ella, sino contra todo aquel que intente corregir su comportamiento.

A lo largo de varios años se reconstruye la vida y costumbre de una familia, dejando al descubierto emociones y conflictos.

Veinte años no es nada

“Veinte años no es nada” reconstructs the last 25 years of Spanish history from the view point of the workers of the self managed experience of the Numax Factory at the end of the seventies.

These images, together with the worker´s situation 30 years after makes us reflect on the last intense decades that we have lived through.

La experiencia autogestionaria de los trabajadores de la fábrica Numax a finales de los años 70 quedó recogida en un documental que ellos mismos decidieron realizar y que encargaron a Joaquín Jordá en el momento en que estaban a punto de cerrar.

Aquellas imágenes recuperadas, junto con la situación de estos trabajadores 30 años después nos llevan a reflexionar sobre las últimas e intensas decadas que nos han tocado vivir.

Trece entre mil

ETA´s terrorism has shaped the lives of thousands of Spanish citizens. We know very little of their sufferings and of the silence to which they were subjected.

Men, women and children, some murdered indiscriminately others after suffering cruel persecution, make up the thirteen stories in this documentary. They are a small representation of the large group of people affected by terrorism in our country. Above all this is the physical embodiment of the limitless pain which arises from the injustice of murder and the lack of social solidarity.

Para miles de españoles el terrorismo de ETA ha sido determinante en su vida; pero también el silencio al que fueron condenados. Poco sabemos de ellos y de sus experiencias posteriores.

Hombres, mujeres y niños asesinados, unos indiscriminadamente otros tras ser perseguidos, todos ellos componen las trece historias de este documental. Estas trece historias son una pequeña representación de ese gran colectivo de afectados por el terrorismo en nuestro país.

La doble vida del faquir (The Magicians)

The Magicians takes us to a school in Sant Juliá de Vilatorta, where in 1937, in the midst of the civil war, a clandestine film maker and orphaned children disguised as sultans and explorers shot an exotic adventure film.

The stars of this film re-live those days of their childhood when they could exchange their school uniforms for oriental turbans while reality impossed its own fancy dress ball with military uniforms and priests in civvies.

La doble vida del Faquir regresa al escenario de un colegio de Sant Julià de Vilatorta donde el año 1937, en plena guerra civil, un cineasta en la clandestinidad y niños huérfanos disfrazados de sultanes y exploradores rodaron una exótica película de aventuras.

Sus protagonistas reviven aquellos días de la infancia cuando pudieron cambiar las batas por turbantes orientales mientras la realidad imponía su propio baile de disfraces con uniformes militares y curas vestidos de paisano.

César y Zain

César and Zain are two young men in their early twenties frm two distant corners of the world, with very different cultural and religious backgrounds: East and West. Spain and India. Madrid and Old Delhi. Christian and Muslim. They both play chess and have become friends through playing over the internet. Hi-tech communications and the games time-honoured language prove to be equally universal. Can two lads from such different cultural environments find common ground to define truly universal values in today’s restless world? Exploring this challenge requires mutual awareness of each others reality and a conscious effort toeards understanding. A dialogue between Civilisations as opposed the Clash of Civilisation. In Aldeaseñor, a town in the province of Soria has only 14 inhabitants. They are the last generation after a thousand years of uninterupted history. Life goes on…in a short time it will die out without a sound and without witnesses.

The villagers and the painter Pello Azketa, have something in common: things have begun to dissapear before them. The narrator returns to his origin and tries to get back an original image, from childhood.

En Aldealseñor, un pueblo de los páramos altos de Soria, quedan hoy 14 habitantes. Son la última generación, después de mil años de historia ininterrumpida. Hoy, la vida continúa. Dentro de poco, se estinguirá sin estrépito y sin más testigos.

Los vecinos de la aldea y el trabajo del pintor Pello Azketa comparten algo en común: las cosas han empezado a desaparecer delante de ellos. La narradora vuelve a su origen y asiste a ese final al tiempo que intenta recuperar una imagen primera del mundo, de la infancia.

A film essay in defence of the Moral Rights of film-makers versus the manipulations suffered by films from the origins of the cinema to the total domination of the audiovisual world.

“Filmmakers vs. Tycoons” combines distinct types of film language: archive material, fundamental fragments of films and fictional scenes such as that set in the Court of Felipe II when the Monarch cuts down a cinemascope picture by Titian on both sides because it doesn’t fit into the space he had kept for it in El Escorial.

With this action the King of Spain became the inventor of panning-scanning which alters the original format of films in our time.

Ensayo cinematográfico en defensa de los derechos morales de los cineastas frente a las manipulaciones que sufren las películas desde los orígenes del cine hasta el dominio actual del mundo audiovisual.

“Cineastas contra magnates” combina distintas formas de lenguaje cinematográfico: material de archivo, fragmentos de films fundamentales y escenas de ficción, como la ambientada en la corte de Felipe II cuando el monarca amputó por ambos lados una cinemascópica pintura de Ticiano porque no cabía en el espacio que le tenía reservado en El Escorial.

Con esta acción el Rey de España se convirtió en el inventor del panning-scanning que en nuestra época altera el formato original de las películas.

On March 11th, 2004, Madrid suffered a chain of terrorist attacks on trains en route to the central station, killing nearly two hundred people and destroying or altering the future of thousands who were affected directly by the tragedy. A group of film directors had the intention of going deeper than the usual news coverage and wanted to contribute a plurality of viewpoints, resulting in a collective film in memory of the victims of the M11 attacks, in solidarity with them and their relatives, in repudiation of the violence of terrorism and with the will to defend democratic values and the freedom to coexist.

El 11 de Marzo de 2004 Madrid sufrió una cadena de atentados terroristas en los trenes que conducían a su estación central, muriendo cerca de doscientas personas y destruyendo o alterando el futuro de miles de personas que se vieron afectadas directamente por la tragedia. Un grupo de cineastas, más allá del flujo informativo, y con la intención de aportar una pluralidad de puntos de vista, han realizado un film colectivo en memoria de los asesinados en los atentados del 11M, en solidaridad con las víctimas y sus familiares, en repudio a la violencia del terrorismo y con la voluntad de obrar en la defensa de los valores democráticos y de la convivencia en libertad.
