El violín

Don Plutarco, his son Genaro and grandson Lucio lead a double life. On  one side, they are modest rural musicians, but on the other, active supporters of the peasant Guerrilla movement against the oppresive government.

When the army invades the village, the rebels must flee and abandon their ammunition. Keen to conserve his inoffensive image as a violinist, Don Plutarco contrives a plan: to recuperate the hidden ammunition in his maize plantations.

He fascinates the captain with his music, but the ammunition must be found……

La Caja Kovak

David Norton, an American sci-fi writer, is invited to an idyllic Mediterranean island to give a lecture. He travels there with his girlfriend and that night he proposes.

However, in the early hours of the morning his wife-to-be throws herself from their hotel balcony. What eveyone presumes is suicide, to him just doesn´t add up.

For Silvia, life has lost its meaning. She is a young tourist on the island and has just failed a suicide attempt. The only thing she knows for sure is that she never wanted to kill herself. Something strange happenned…something forced her to jump from the balcony.

David Norton, un escritor norteamericano de novelas de ciencia-ficción, es invitado a una paradisíaca isla del Mediterráneo para dar una conferencia. Llega hasta allí con su pareja, que esa misma noche acepta casarse con él.

A las pocas horas, su prometida se tira por la ventana del hotel. Parece un suicidio, pero para él no tiene sentido. Nada tiene sentido tampoco para Silvia, una joven turista que fracasó en el intento de quitarse la vida. Lo único que tiene claro es que nunca deseó suicidarse. Algo pasó, algo la forzó a saltar de un balcón en contra de su voluntad.

La Última Luna

In his final prizewinning production, Miguel Littin penetrates  his Palestinian roots following his grand parents’ late emigration to Chile at the start of the last century.

Inspired by one particular story told to him at a young age, he tries to give another viewpoint of the clash between Palestinians and Israelis – “I am against terrorism of all type and if I had not known that this film could contribute to the beginnings of peace, I wouldn´t have had the obsession to do it.”

The materialization of this obsession encarnate Soliman, a young Palestinian who buys land for his Jewish friend Jacob in order to build a two-storey house. Jacob knows exactly how he wants his house to look like, but he doesn´t know how to build it. Soliman helps out by building him a solid house but soon the appearance of a young woman who was injured by the Turks has brought an aura of hate to the place.

En última y multipremiada realización la ultima luna ¡, Miguel Littin se adentra en sus raíces palestinas, ya que su abuelos emigraron al Chile en las primeras décadas del siglo pasado. A través de un relato inspirado en las historias que escuchaba en su infancia y adolescencia , trata de ofrecer otra visión del enfrentamiemto entre palestinos y isreaelíes ” Estoy en contra de todo tipo de terrorismo y si no supiera que esta película puede contribuir a un principio de paz no hubiera tenido esa obsesión tan grande por hacerla”.

La materialización de esta obsesión la encarnan Soliman un joven palestino a quien le compra un terreno a su amigo Judío Jacob para construir una casa  de dos plantas.Jacob sabe cómo quire su casa, pero n sabe como construir la.

La ayuda de Soliman resulta decisiva para hacer une sólida edificación, pero la aparición de una joven que ha sido herida por los turcos siembra le semilla del odio.

Aguaviva

Aguaviva, a small town in Teruel, has been depopulating. In order to put an end to this, its mayor made an international call to families willing to emigrate and settle in the town, in exchange for work and a residence.

With this starting point, the film brings together the existences of the newly-arrived immigrants and of the rural community that welcomes them. “Aguaviva” fuses the tensions that come about when two groups, who willingly integrate themselves and come to live together. The film goes into how the new inhabitants assimilate the process of integration and how the locals perceive the arrival of foreigners with different ways of seeing and experiencing life. During the course of the year, the passing of the seasons marks the development of the main characters, who are going to become involved in a psychological mesh that affects a human landscape that had been unbreachable until then.

Aguaviva, una pequeña localidad de Teruel, se estaba despoblando. Para evitarlo, su alcalde hizo un llamamiento internacional a familias dispuestas a emigrar e instalarse en el pueblo a cambio de trabajo y vivienda.

 Con este punto de partida, la película recoge las vivencias de los inmigrantes recién llegados y de la comunidad rural que los acoge. Siempre desde un prisma emocional, “Aguaviva” plasma las tensiones que desencadena la convivencia entre dos grupos cuya fusión no se revela fácil. La película profundiza en cómo los nuevos habitantes asimilan el proceso de integración y cómo los lugareños perciben la llegada de forasteros con maneras diferentes de ver y sentir la vida. A lo largo de un año, el paso de las estaciones va marcando la evolución de los protagonistas, quienes se ven envueltos en un entramado psicológico que altera un paisaje humano hasta entonces infranqueable.

This film looks into the trials held in Paris, Copenhagen and Stockholm in defence of the moral rights of the filmmakers John Huston, Sydney Pollack and Vilgot Sjoman, for cases of electronic colouring, panning-scanning and commercial breaks in television.

Other sequences show children watching “Fort Apache” by John Ford in the fifties to introduce the subject of dubbing and a situation at the Vatican in the fifteenth century concludes a report by Jules Dassin on the new censorship invented by companies such as MovieMask.

It also deals with issues related to the Final Cut and the first meeting held in 1956 in Paris by filmmakers from all over the world to defend their rights.

La película profundiza en los juicios celebrados en París, Copenhague y Estocolmo en defensa de los derechos morales de los cineastas John Huston, Sydney Pollack y Vilgot Sjoman, por casos de coloreado electrónico, panning-scanning e interrupciones publicitarias en televisión.

Otras secuencias muestran a unos niños viendo “Fort Apache” de John Ford en los años cincuenta para introducir el tema del doblaje y una situación en el Vaticano del siglo XV es la conclusión al informe de Jules Dassin sobre la nueva censura inventada por compañías como MovieMask.

También se tratan temas relacionados con el “Final Cut” y se recrea la primera reunión que tuvieron cineastas del mundo entero en 1956 en París para defender sus derechos.

La piel vendida

Pornographic films have gone from being a product bought furtively to being sold in newsagents with the daily press. “Sold skin” tries to open a window on a kind of filmmaking which we have all seen but know little about. It hopes to do this through the main characters from an everyday point of view.

The actors, actresses, directors, producers give us an insight to their profession. They tell us the cinema´s most intricate details where, precisely because the images and content are so explicit, both the actor´s and viewer´s motivations remain hidden.

El cine pornográfico ha pasado de ser un producto comprado a hurtadillas, a venderse en los quioscos con la prensa diaria. “La piel vendida” pretende abrir una ventana a un cine que todos hemos visto pero que casi nadie conoce, y lo quiere hacer -desde la cotidianidad- a través de sus protagonistas.

Sus actores, actrices, directores, productores… nos cuentan su profesión desde las luces y las sombras de un cine que a fuerza de ser explicito en sus imágenes y temáticas, permanece oculto en sus motivaciones: las del espectador y las de sus protagonistas.

Tiempo de valientes

Mariano Silverstein (Diego Pereti) is a psychoanalyst who after being convicted is serving his sentence realizing community services. The judge assigns him the task of looking after Alfredo Díaz (Luis Luque), a police inspector who is devastated by his wife’s infidelity. That’s how Silverstein gets to improvise an itinerant psychoanalysis session while he accompanies Díaz through his investigation of a crime, becoming ever more absorved by the police universe. But the relationship between these two strangers will definitely change when Doctor Silverstein asks Diaz to come to dinner to his house with his wife and he introduces him to his own wife.

La casa de mi abuela = My Grandmother’s house

 My Grandmother’s House looks at the peculiar relationship between Marina, an impulsive and disrespectful 6-year old girl, and Marita, her 75-year old grandmother. The old-fashioned upbringing imposed by the grandmother leads the girl to rebellion, not only against her but against everyone.

Sumas y restas = Addictions and subtractions

Medellín, Colombia, at the height of the drug cartels. Santiago, a married middle-class engineer from a good family has serious financial problems.

Through a childhood friend he meets Gerardo the owner of a mechanics yard and a “traqueto”, or drug dealer. Fascinated by the atmosphere of decadent parties, drugs and easy women, Santiago finds himself trapped in a whirlwind of easy money, drug dealing and hired killers.

Little by little his professional and family life become affected, until he starts to drown in a wave of violence with no escape.

Medellín, Colombia, en pleno apogeo de los “carteles” de la droga. Santiago, ingeniero de clase media, casado y de buena familia, tiene serios problemas financieros.

A través de un amigo de la infancia conocerá a Gerardo, dueño de un taller mecánico y “traqueto” (traficante de cocaína). El Rey

Colombia at the end of the sixties. Pedro Rey is a petty bandit in partnership with Harry, a North American who works for the Peace Core. He works out ways of smuggling cocaine to the United States.

Business is growing and Rey, blinded by ambition, dreams of having his own drug emporium. Colombia´s first multinational business.

“El Rey” emerged as a documentary project that would go into the origins of drug smuggling in depth and its gangsters. Then, it turned into a fiction film for which part of the investigation was useful, especially for two reasons: finding locations that were original settings and finding extras for the film that were actually involved in that world.

The main character himself is inspired by a local who was the first great legend at the begining of Colombian drug-trafficing history. More than 5000 people attended his enormous funeral.

Colombia, finales de los 60. Pedro Rey, un bandido de poca monta, en alianza con Harry, norteamericano que trabaja para los Cuerpos de Paz, se ingenia mecanismos para procesar cocaína y llevarla a Estados Unidos.

El negocio crece  y Rey, cegado por la ambición, sueña con hacer del negocio del narcotráfico la primera “empresa multinacional” colombiana.

El Rey surgió como un proyecto documental que profundizase en los orígenes del narcotráfico y sus primeros capos. Convertido en film de ficción, parte del trabajo de investigación fue muy útil tanto en la utilización de localizaciones que habían sido escenarios originales de los hechos como en la aparición de extras que vivieron y forjaron la historia.

El propio protagonista está inspirado en un personaje local que fue el primer gran mito de los inicios del narcotráfico colombiano a cuyo apoteósico sepelio asistieron más de 5000 personas.

Iluminados por el fuego = Enlightened by fire

Enlightened by Fire portrays the memories of 40-year-old Esteban Leguizamon. In 1982 he was sent to fight on Malvinas Islands as a conscript when he was only 18 years old. An ex-colleague’s attempted suicide triggers wartime memories, the times he shared with two young recruits: Vargas, who tried to commit suicide, and Juan, who died in combat.

He is reminded of not only the horrors of war, the suffering from the cold and hunger, but also the memories of friendship and camaraderie. From Esteban’s perspective we are shown how their lives become slowly entwined by the hand of death. Twenty years after the war Esteban decides to return to the Malvinas in order to confront his past and try to heal his open wounds.

Iluminados por el Fuego narra los recuerdos de Esteban Leguizamón, un hombre de 40 años que, en 1982, cuando tenía sólo 18, fue llevado como soldado recluta a combatir a las islas Malvinas. A partir del intento de suicidio de uno de sus ex compañeros, Esteban se sumerge en los recuerdos de esa guerra que compartió con otros dos jóvenes reclutas: Vargas, el suicida, y Juan, muerto en combate.

Allí aparecen no sólo los horrores propios de la guerra y el padecimiento del frío y del hambre, sino también las historias de amistad y compañerismo. Desde la mirada de Esteban, la película pone en evidencia la lenta y gradual inmersión de sus frágiles vidas en el corazón mismo de la muerte. A los 20 años de la guerra, Esteban decide volver a las Malvinas para reencontrarse con su pasado y cerrar sus viejas heridas.

Animals ferits = Animales Heridos

Hermanas

Natalia Levin, an Argentine journalist based in Spain, is reunited with her sister Elena for the first time in nine years, after a long night in 1975, when she was forced into exile.

Elena has settled in Texas, where her husband, Sebastián, works for a multinational company. Natalia remembers the events leading up to her departure that she has never clarified in her mind.

Elena makes an effort to bury her painful memories in the backyard of the “American dream.” The reunion will make both sisters face the truth with open eyes and hearts.

“Sisters” is a story about being uprooted and the need to regain one’s identity through memory. It is a film of contrasts, of two different cultures, languages and decades: the 70’s and the 80’s, Argentina and the United States. The intensity, passion and violence of the 70’s in that Latinamerican country, juxtaposes the comforts, stability and calm of the USA in the 80’s, at the height of the Republican years.

Agua con sal (Salted water)

Olga, a young Cuban, arrived in Spain with a grant for her studies thinking that this would be the start of a better life. However, after time she becomes an illegal immigrant who suffers social isolation. She can’t go back home and has to make her own way in life.

Mari Jo, is a young woman from Ribera Alta in Valencia. She was born into a family with many problems and her life has been touched by the hand of fate. They are both illegal workers in a furniture factory where they earn two euros an hour. “Water with Salt” is a story of women who are fighting to survive in this welfare state with great opportunities where they are desperately searching for what they have already lost.

Olga es una joven cubana que llega a España con una beca para sus estudios, pensando que será el comienzo de una vida mejor. Al cabo del tiempo se convierte en un inmigrante ilegal que sufre los problemas de la marginación, no puede volver a casa y tiene que buscarse la vida.

Mari Jo es una joven valenciana de la Ribera Alta, nacida en una familia llena de problemas y a la que el destino ha marcado su vida. Son trabajadoras ilegales de una fábrica de muebles en la que cobran dos euros por hora. Agua con sal es una historia de mujeres que luchan por sobrevivir en esta sociedad de bienestar y grandes oportunidades, en la que buscan desesperadamente lo que han perdido.

“Veinte años no es nada” reconstructs the last 25 years of Spanish history from the view point of the workers of the self managed experience of the Numax Factory at the end of the seventies.

These images, together with the worker´s situation 30 years after makes us reflect on the last intense decades that we have lived through.

La experiencia autogestionaria de los trabajadores de la fábrica Numax a finales de los años 70 quedó recogida en un documental que ellos mismos decidieron realizar y que encargaron a Joaquín Jordá en el momento en que estaban a punto de cerrar.

Aquellas imágenes recuperadas, junto con la situación de estos trabajadores 30 años después nos llevan a reflexionar sobre las últimas e intensas decadas que nos han tocado vivir.

ETA´s terrorism has shaped the lives of thousands of Spanish citizens. We know very little of their sufferings and of the silence to which they were subjected.

Men, women and children, some murdered indiscriminately others after suffering cruel persecution, make up the thirteen stories in this documentary. They are a small representation of the large group of people affected by terrorism in our country. Above all this is the physical embodiment of the limitless pain which arises from the injustice of murder and the lack of social solidarity.

Hombres, mujeres y niños asesinados, unos indiscriminadamente otros tras ser perseguidos, todos ellos componen las trece historias de este documental. Estas trece historias son una pequeña representación de ese gran colectivo de afectados por el terrorismo en nuestro país.

His desires, his successes, his struggles are reflected by his paticular way of making mucic. The film is divided into three stages: his discovery, his success and his demise.

Through these stages we get to find out about his love life, his national and international fame, his recordings which changed the face of flamenco, his marriage to Dolores, ¨La Chispa¨, his flirtation with drugs and his physical deterioration at such a young age.

Camarón es un recorrido por la vida y obra del maestro de la música flamenca, José Monge Cruz “Camarón de la Isla”. Un acercamiento a este cantautor que innovó en el flamenco, influyó en las nuevas generaciones y rompió barreras sociales y artístiticas.

Sus deseos, sus éxitos y sus luchas se ven reflejados en su visión particular de hacer música. La película esta dividida en tres etapas: el descubrimiento, la confirmación y  reconocimiento-despedida.

A través de ellas, conoceremos sus enredos amorosos, su reconocimiento nacional e internacional, la grabación de discos que revolucionaran la interpretación del flamenco, su boda con Dolores “La Chispa”, el coqueteo con las drogas y su deterioro físico a muy pronta edad.
