Bar ‘El Chino’

The bar El Chino is where the walls are peeled yet the essence of the tango survives. Its veterans are emblematic, especially its creator, Jorge Garcés, the Chinese man.

 

While he lived, the Chinese man summoned the diverse public, that were meeting in the place and his artists were of an authentic value, without disguises or commercial devices. Jorge, a filmmaker, as he was for years; his friends take it to the Bar el Chino. They know that this place is special to him.

 

During months of filming images, with the idea of capturing from a documentary, the essence there is in it he transmits. He makes friends with both the proprietor and the people. When the Chinese man dies, saddening, it interrupts the filming.

 

One day a visit comes from Martina, a young girl who is fascinated with the Bar el Chino, who decides to short a documentary about the same thing and wants to see the images that Jorge filmed.

El Bar El Chino es un boliche de paredes descascaradas en donde se conserva la esencia del tango. Sus veteranos personajes son emblemáticos, especialmente su creador, Jorge Garcés, El Chino.

Mientras vivió, El Chino convocó a diversos públicos, que encontraban en el lugar y en sus artistas el valor de lo auténtico, sin disfraces ni artificios comerciales. Jorge, cineasta, cumple años; sus amigos lo llevan al Bar El Chino. Saben que ese lugar es especial para él.

Durante meses filmó imágenes, con la idea de capturar desde un documental, la esencia de lo que allí se transmitía. Se hizo amigo del dueño y de su gente. Cuando El Chino murió, entristecido, interrumpió el rodaje.

Un día recibe la visita de Martina, una joven que fascinada por el Bar El Chino, está decidida a rodar un documental sobre el mismo y desea ver las imágines que filmó Jorge.

El Cielito

Felix, a young, 20 year old tramp, has come to a little, lost town in the interior of Argentina. In the station he finds by chance, an unemployed builder, who offers Felix a job in the farmhouse where he lives, with his wife, Mercedes and his son Chango who is hardly one year old.

 

It is there, in this context of loneliness, under the burning sun of the Pampa, where Felix discovers bit by bit the daily tension, violent and mute, in which they survive.

 

At the same time in which the pair is destroyed, a true story of love emerges between small Chango and Felix.

 

This marginal and solitary being finally finds a sense to his life: to save the child from the chaos.

Félix, un joven vagabundo de 20 años, llega a un pueblito perdido del interior de Argentina. En la estación se encuentra por casualidad, un desocupado devenido en albañil, que le ofrece a Félix un trabajo en la chacra donde vive, con su mujer, Mercedes y su hijo Chango de apenas un año.

Es ahí, en ese contexto de soledad, bajo el sol abrasador de la Pampa, donde Félix descubre poco a poco la tensión cotidiana, violenta y muda en la cual ellos sobreviven.

Al mismo tiempo en que la pareja se destruye, una verdadera historia de amor surge entre el pequeño Chango y Félix.

Este ser marginal y solitario encuentra finalmente un sentido a su vida: salvar al niño del caos.

El Polaquito

A street kid earns his living singing tangos in the trains of Buenos Aires´ Central Station. Here he meets “Pelu”, a young girl who he falls in love with and tries to rescue from the mafia which is exploiting her.

“El Polaquito’s” actions lead him to a confrontation with “Rengo” (lame), leader of the mafia. With the aid of the station’s police Rengo starts to harass him and tries to remove the idea from his head.

Un chico de la calle se gana la vida cantando tangos en los trenes de la estación central de Buenos Aires, la gente le conoce como “El Polaquito”.

“El Polaquito” conoce a “Pelu” una joven de la que se enamora perdidamente y a la que intenta rescatar de la mafia que la explota. Pero para ello, deberá enfrentarse a “Rengo” (Cojo) líder de esta mafia que, confabulado con la policía de la estación, comienza a hostigarlo tratando de quitarle esa idea de la cabeza.

Diarios de motocicleta = The motorcycle diaries

In 1952, two Argentine youths, Ernesto Guevara, a medicine student and Alberto Granados, a biochemist, go on a road trip to discover the real Latin America.

The two friends leave Buenos Aires on a clapped out 500 cc Norton motorbike, urged on by the spirit of romantic adventure. When the motorbike breaks down, the travellers continue by hitchhiking and, little by little, they get to know a different Latin America.

These experiences turn them into the men they will become and who will shape their ethical and political life journey.

Sus experiencias hacen que despierten en ellos los hombres en que se convertirán en el futuro y que definirán el recorrido ético y político de sus vidas.

Mónica

Mónica gets a job in one of the largest Communication companies, thanks to her best friend Laura.

Her boss, an aggressive executive, quickly realises she is capable and makes her his right hand woman. She enjoys this position until her boss starts to make sexual advances.

Little by little her life in the company becomes a living hell. Mónica decides to take her boss to court, but finds that her husband does not trust her, Laura abandons her and that is enormously difficult to prosecute a company that has the power to make sure she never works again.

A young Jewish boy works with his mother in a haberdashers shop in ‘El Once’ gallery. He is beginning the process of obtaining Polish citizenship to go to live in Europe.

This film tells his story, that of the diverse people who inhabit the gallery and also that of his father, who some years ago went to fight in the Yom Kippur war, and is now going to be reunited with his son.

Un joven judío trabaja junto a su madre en una mercería de un galería de El Once y está iniciando los trásmites para conseguir la ciudadania polaca e irse a vivir a Europa. 

Esta película cuenta su historia, la de los diversos personajes que habitan la galeria y la de su padre, que hace varios años se fue a luchar en la guerra de Yom Kippur, y que ahora se reencuentra con su hijo.

Nicotina

Lolo spies on his charming neighbour Andrea with a webcam and manipulates her life. Two thugs, Nene and Tomson discuss, to the point of stupidity, what is the most important cause of cancer, cigarettes or destity.

An extremely fat Russian, Sbóvoda who even distrusts his own shadow, has 20 diamonds to pay Nene for a CD recorded by Lolo with contains the secret entry codes for a Swiss Bank. Everyone is after the diamonds. Svóboda, Nene and Tomson, because it’s their job and Lolo because he hopes to finally win over Andrea with his share and move from  virtual love to a real one.

Las voces de la noche

Spain in the fifties, in a village which has grown up around a textile factory. Jorge is the youngest son of the founder and Elisa the daughter of his accountant. Both of them live with their families and are stuck in a routine that is hardly affected by small every day worries.

Jorge and Elisa only manage to put up with the monotony of their lives because twice a week they spend the afternoon together in a city hotel room. There they have created their little world, oblivious to everything outside, a place where they can feel free.

When Elisa finds out that the village is beginning to grow suspicious about them she decides to put a stop to the meetings in the city. That very day Jorge takes an important step by turning up at the girl’s house. Asking for her hand in marriage is the beginning of their life as a couple and little by little the relationship between Elisa and Jorge becomes more conventional.

That is until a story from the past, a love story like any other, opens Elisa’s eyes and makes her take a decision which is to change both their lives for ever.

España años 50, en un pueblo surgido alrededor de una fábrica de tejidos. Jorge es el hijo pequeño del fundador y Elisa la hija de su contable. Los dos viven con sus familias, sumidos en una rutina apenas afectada por las pequeñas preocupaciones de cada día.

Sin embargo si Jorge y Elisa son capaces de soportar la monotonía de sus vidas es porque dos días a la semana pasan la tarde juntos en una habitación de la ciudad. Allí han creado su pequeño mundo, ajeno a todo lo exterior, en el que pueden sentirse libres.

Cuando Elisa se entera de que en el pueblo comienza a sospecharse de ellos, decide terminar con los encuentros en la ciudad. Ese mismo día Jorge da un paso adelante presentándose en casa de la chica. La petición de mano inicia la vida en pareja y la relación de Elisa y Jorge se va haciendo cada vez un poco más convencional.

Hasta que una pequeña historia del pasado, una historia de amor, otra más, abre los ojos a Elisa y la lleva a tomar una decisión que cambiará para siempre su vida y la de Jorge.

El coche de pedales

During The Easter Week of 1959, in the tragiocomic social landscape of Franco’s Spain, where the radio is still the centre of the household, and where the light bulbs are of a low wattage, the emotional tale unfolds of the a of a nine-year old boy: Pablito.

Pablito dearly wants to get a pedal-push car which he sees in a neighbourhood shop. He has an unlucky, middle-class family- and they are suffering from a stressful comparison with other relatives of the family who are again middle-class but with better luck and some good connections.

With the desire for the pedal-push car and the hopes of attaining it, encouraged his parents and with his savings box at the ready he is taken on a strange journey into the colourful and surprising family background full of lies and deceit.

Pablito will survive this family melodrama thanks to his capacity to use his imagination to answer questions that his parents and teachers don’t provide for him. Pablito will create his own happy ending.

Durante la Semana Santa de 1959, en el tragicómico paisaje social de la España radiofónica y con bombillas de pocos watios, transcurre la fábula de la crónica sentimental de un niño de nueve años: Pablito.

Pablito desea el coche de pedales que ve en un escaparate cerca de su casa. Su familia -clase media con mala suerte-. sufre la sorda presión familiar de la otra parte de la familia -clase media con buena suerte y mejores influencias-.

El deseo del coche y la esperanza de conseguirlo que le alientan sus padres llevan al niño, hucha en ristre, a un viaje extraño al abigarrado y sorprendente mundo familiar lleno de mentiras y chantajes.

Pablito sobrevive sentimentalmente en ese ambiente gracias a su capacidad para obtener en la imaginación las respuestas que sus padres y educadores no le brindan. Pablito creará su propio final feliz.

Unibertsolariak munduaren ertzaren bila = Los Balunis en la aventura del fin del mundo

The Balunis don´t know much about the world that exists further than the borders of Boroville… they only know what a businessman called Cuadrado tells them.

Cuadrado, in exchange for the precious marbles that the Balunis make, provides them with much aid and occasionally complications.

During Pluto´s birthday, Saturn breaks by accident, the gift which the Balunis had made for him with so much care. Saturn, realising that his companions consider him responsible for the accident, gets very angry and full of arrogance, declares: “If nobody wants to see me, I will go to the end of the world and there I will stay so that nobody will see me again”.

Nobody believes Saturn’s bravado until the next day when he cannot be found anywhere, and they realise that he was being serious when he said that he would go to the end of the world.

All the Balunis decide to go out and find him, except for Cuadrado, who tries without success to make them give up on their pledge.

Los Balunis no saben mucho sobre el mundo que existe más allá de las fronteras de Boroville… únicamente conocen aquello que un vendedor llamado Cuadrado les cuenta.

Cuadrado, a cambio de las preciosas canicas que fabrican los Balunis, les proporciona muchos productos y, en ocasiones algunas complicaciones.

Durante el cumpleaños de Plutón, Satur rompe sin querer el regalo que con tanto esmero habían preparado todos los Balunis para él. Satur, al ver que sus compañeros le consideran culpable del accidente, se enfada mucho y llenó de arrogancia, declara: “Si todo el mundo quiere perderme de vista, me iré al fin del mundo y allí me quedaré para que nadie nunca me vuelva a ver”.

Nadie cree la brabuconada de Satur hasta que al día siguiente éste no aparece por ningún lado, y se dan cuenta de que hablaba en serio cuando decía que se iría al fin del mundo.

Todos los Balunis deciden salir a buscarlo, menos Cuadrado, que trata sin éxito de hacerles desistir en su empeño.

Sin Ton Ni Sonia

Orlando (Juan Manuel Bernal), a neurotic dubbing director for Tv series, lives with Sonia (Mariana Gajá) a woman in search of inner peace. Suffocated by her love, Orlando is incapable of working out the, for him, complicated language that young couples speak, proving uncapable of living alone. Mauricio (José María Yazpik) loves and hates René (Cecilia Suárez) at the same time. At her end René is so tired of the fact that Mauricio prefers cyberspace to her that she decides to abandon him once again.

The harshness of these couples’ love life contrasts with the story of Mamá Rosa (Tara Parra), a charming old nurse that finds her true vocation as a serial killer whith a weakness for happy couples.

La suerte dormida

Lo mejor que le puede pasar a un cruasán

Pablo Miralles lives, quietly dedicated to artificial pleasures – prostitutes, philosophy, not necessarily in that order. That is until his brother Sebastian disappears in circumstances more than mysterious and his odious sister-in-law demands that he look for him.

First of all it seemed to be a standard case of illicit relation between sectary and boss. Then, the possibility was considered that he had been kidnapped by someone that insisted in not asking for a ransom. The third possibility, that he had been abducted by an alien, was disagreed on unanimously.

Despite the circumstances, Pablo, would have calmly continued with his life. That is if it wasn’t for his ex-girlfriend, Fina, getting him seriously involved in helping her find her brother – there are some people who are extremely boring.

En segunda instancia, se baraja la posibilidad de que haya sido secuestrado por alguien que se obstina en no pedir rescate. En la ciudad

The city is Barcelona, but it could be Boston or Baghdad … in every city one finds groups of friends who have woven unique tapestries of relations, warm enough to give comfort in times of need, strong enough to withstand envy and jealousy.

Friends like Sofia, Sara, Mario, Manu, Irene … Eight men and women in their thirties who lead normal lives. They meet in restaurants, bars and bedrooms; some are married, others related to each other. But how well do they know each other? Do they really tell each other everything? “In the City” paints the intimate portrait of people who are close to one another, but can’t talk about their feelings.

They express their desires as the truth, their betrayals as accidents, loneliness as an illusion …they sometimes can’t express what they long to tell…and don’t know why. However, they know that their friends will hold their arms out to catch them if they fall.

La ciudad es Barcelona, pero podría ser Boston o Bagdad… Pues en toda ciudad uno encuentra a grupos de amigos que han tejido redes especiales de relaciones lo bastante cálidas como para dar apoyo en tiempos de necesidad, tan fuertes que resisten la envidia y los celos.

Platillos Volantes

1972. In an industrial city in Catalonia two textile workers with the most normal of lives and jobs are found on the railway lines, beheaded. Next to them, there’s a note which reads: THE ALIENS ARE CALLING US. WE BELONG TO INFINITY.

From this moment onwards, the strange happenings of these two characters and the bizarre friends they make along the way are reconstructed. This is a story in which the wonder of reality conquers over fiction once and for all.

1972. En una ciudad industrial catalana dos obreros textiles con vidas y ocupaciones de lo más normales, son hallados en la vía del tren, decapitados y junto a una nota de despedida que dice: LOS EXTRATERRESTRES NOS LLAMAN. PERTENECEMOS AL INFINITO.

A partir de aquí, se reconstruirán las peripecias de estos dos personajes y los extraños compañeros de aventuras que encuentran en su viaje. Una historia en la que queda demostrado una vez más que la realidad supera con creces a la ficción.

Betizu entre las Estrellas

The Betizu are an underground music group without any great plans. A series of circumstances leads them to compete in Uztarrock, the biggest festival in the whole galaxy, organized by Buff Alu, a famous business tycoon who owns nearly all the galactic recording companies.

Surprisingly the Betizu are chosen as the revelation group of the year, which causes different reactions in the group members and finally the separation of the group. But one of them accidentally finds out just what kind of a set up Buff Alu’s music empire really is so Buff Alu starts to pursue him which involves a musical combat with the Nuevas Betizu taking the lead until they are accused of plagiarism and even their own fans reject them. But the Betizu have got new allies….. other musicians who have suffered the same fate earlier.

Las Betizu forman un grupo musical underground sin grandes pretensiones. Un serie de circunstancias hará que compitan en Uztarrock, el mayor festival de toda la galaxia, organizado por Buff Alu, famoso magnate propietario de casi todas las discográficas galácticas.

Las Betizu, sorprendentemente, serán seleccionadas como grupo revelación del año, lo que generará diferentes reacciones entre los miembros del grupo y en última instancia la separación del grupo. Pero, accidentalmente, una de ellas se percata del montaje que supone el imperio musical de Buff Alu y comienza a ser perseguida por éste, lo que conlleva un combate musical en el que las Nuevas Betizu toman la delantera hasta que son acusadas de plagio y repudiadas por sus propios fans. Pero las Betizu tienen nuevos aliados… otros músicos que anteriormente han pasado por el mismo trance.

Madrid, Autumn 2002. Pablo López is just an ordinary thirty something man. He works in an investment bank and is fed-up with everything.

Nine o’clock on one Monday morning in a traffic jam in the centre of Madrid. Pablo’s car crashes into the back of a convertible belonging to a typical Madrid city girl. This gets him into trouble with the police and the insurance company and makes him psychologically destroy the girl.

One day when the harassment has reached the point of absurdity, he finds himself caught up in a poetic, heartbreaking love affair with his victim’s sister, a fifteen-year-old girl.

Miguel Angel, Izan, Dani and Jorge are a group of teenagers who, with simple happiness manage to defy the cruelty of fate and make their convalescence in the trauma ward of a hospital bearable.

In this situation “Los Pelones” realize the importance of friendship and belonging to a group. Together with their portrayal as a group, each individual is explored personally with relation to their medical situation: Miguel-Angel’s supposedly self-sufficient loneliness, Jorge’s fear of the diagnosis, Izan’s indelible memories, Dani’s emotional anxieties… Humour is the key that “Los Pelones” use to change their luck.

Miguel Ángel, Izan, Dani y Jorge, son un grupo de adolescentes que logran con su alegría desafiar el desprecio del destino y hacer soportable su convalecencia en la planta de traumatología de un hospital.

“Los Pelones” descubren en este contexto la importancia de la amistad y de la pertenencia a un grupo. Pero frente a las reafirmaciones colectivas, está la identidad de cada uno reaccionando a su situación: la soledad pretendidamente autosuficiente de Miguel Ángel, el temor de Jorge al diagnóstico, los recuerdos imborrables de Izan, las inquietudes emocionales de Dani… El humor es la fuerza vital que emplean “Los Pelones” para alterar su suerte.
