Fernando Robles from Buenos Aires has already reached sixty and teaches education at the university. He teaches how to teach. He has been married to Lilian Roviera his whole life. She is a Spaniard, the daughter of Catalans and she works as a social worker in the run-down districts of Buenos Aires.

They love, respect and are loyal to each other. They have never got bored with being together and they enjoy each other’s company. Neither can imagine life without the other. They have got one son, Pedro, who is married and has two children, he has got a good job in Madrid where he lives in a middle-class suburb. But Fernando’s calm, reflective world is deeply affected when he receives official notification of his compulsory early retirement without any previous warning, a fact which is going to change his whole life.

Fernando es porteño, ya ha cumplido los sesenta y es profesor de pedagogía en la universidad. Lleva toda la vida casado con Liliana, española, hija de catalanes, que trabaja como asistente social en barrios marginales de Buenos Aires.

Se quieren, se respetan, son leales. Nunca se aburren estando juntos, les gusta estar soles. Se conocen profundamente, se aceptan, se pelean sin odio, se divierten. Son amantes, socios, amigos, cómplices. Ninguno de ellos concibe la vida sin el otro. Tienen un hijo, Pedro, casado y con dos hijos, que tiene un buen trabajo en Madrid, donde vive en una urbanización de clase media acomodada. Pero el mundo plácido y reflexivo de Fernando se ve profundamente alterado cuando recibe sin previo aviso la comunicación oficial en la que le informan de su jubilación forzosa, un hecho que va a cambiar sus vidas…

Martín (Hache)

Martín Echenique (Federico Luppi) is a film director from Buenos Aires who has been living in Madrid for twenty years, as he hates Argentina. Following the family tradition, he names his son Martín too, though everyone calls him Hache.

Hache (Juan Diego Botto) is 19 years old and lives with his mother in Buenos Aires. He’s not working or in school; instead he hangs around on the street and plays electric guitar. Five years have gone by since the last time he saw his father, but they see each other again when his father returns to Argentina on hearing that Hache is in hospital, possibly by attempted suicide.

His mother suggests that he go to live with his father in Madrid. There he sees that his dad lives with passionate, enthusiastic people, but that he doesn’t give into his feelings. What he loves is being exposed to pain, which worries Hache. 

Martín Echenique (Federico Luppi) es un director de cine, natural de Buenos Aires, que lleva veinte años viviendo en Madrid. Detesta su país. Siguiendo la tradición familiar, su hijo se llama Martín, pero todos le llaman Hache. Hache (Juan Diego Botto) tiene 19 años y vive en Buenos Aires con su madre. Ni estudia ni trabaja; callejea y toca rock con su guitarra eléctrica.

Han pasado cinco años desde que vio a su padre por última vez, pero vuelven a encontrarse cuando, al sufrir Hache un accidente que le pone en las puertas de una muerte quizá deseada. Su madre le propone que se vaya a vivir con su padre a Madrid. Aquí descubre que Martín comparte su vida con gente apasionada, pero él no se permite sentir. El que ama está expuesto al dolor y eso le da panico.

Un lugar en el Mundo

Ernesto’s return to San Luis, the little town where he grew up, evokes his childhood memories and the events that impacted his adolescence. He remembers his first love, Luciana, daughter of the rich landowner Andrada who was practically an enemy of the Valle Bermejo cooperative, founded by Nelda, a nun not very accustomed to wearing her habit.

His parents Ana and Mario belonged to the generation who tried to change the world but didn’t succeed - militants of the Peronist resistance living in exile in Spain for the duration of the military dictatorship. And finally, he recalls Hans, the kind of guy who goes through life defending himself, surviving. 

The actions of these people were his education, his lessons in life. While it might be easy to forget the past, these things remain in his mind forever; it’s not about winning, what’s important is fighting for what you believe in.

La vuelta a San Luis, el pueblecito donde pasó su infancia, hará que Ernesto evoque los sucesos que conmovieron su infancia.

Recuerda los tiempos de su primer amor, Luciana, hija del capataz de Andrada, terrateniente del lugar y virtual enemigo de la cooperativa de Valle Bermejo, fundada por Nelda, una monja que no está muy acostumbrada a usar hábito.

Ana y Mario, sus padres, pertenecen a una generación que iba a cambiar el mundo y fracasó. Militantes de la resistencia peronista durante la dictadura militar han vivido exiliados en España. Y finalmente Hans, un tipo que anda por la vida defendiéndose, sobreviviendo. Los actos de estas personas fueron su escuela, su mejor instrucción.

Puede que olvide otras cosas, pero estos años no, le han dejado huella; lo importante no es ganar, lo importante es pelear para lograr lo imposible.

Pepe Carvalho – 3 Golpe de Estado

In a situation of political crisis, a group of radical conservatives prepare to assasinate the president in a coup d’état by hiring the mercenary American Davis, an ex-member of the CIA.

In Barcelona Davis meets Charo, the prostitute friend of Carvalho, realising that he was his Spanish teacher back when they both worked for the CIA. 

Davis, now feeling old and worn out, proposes that he and Carvalho carry out the murder together and share the earnings. Carvalho refuses and just when Davis is about to kill the president, he commits suicide instead.

En una situación de crisis política, un grupo inmovilista se dispone a dar un golpe de estado asesinando al presidente del gobierno, para lo cual es contratado el mercenario norteamericano Davis, ex miembro de la “CIA”.

En Barcelona Davis conoce a Charo, la prostituta amiga de Carvalho, por mediación de la cual se encuentra con el detective, que fue profesor suyo de castellano en los tiempos en que ambos trabajaban para la CIA.

Davis, que se encuentra viejo y acabado, ofrece a Carvalho realizar el atentado juntos y compartir las ganancias. Pero Carvalho no acepta y Davis se suicida en el momento en que debía matar al presidente.

Pepe Carvalho – 1 Young Serra, Peso Pluma

By the order of “Rino” Santos, an old boxing coach and friend of the deceased boxer “Young” Serra, Carvalho investigates his death, and finds his ex-wife, Maribel, so that she might look after their son, “Chico” Serra. On “Chico”’s advice.

Carvalho interrogates the prostitute Mimi and Walter, her pimp, and finds that he killed “Young” (who had just come back, crushed, from his last fight), but his intention was only to give him a physical punishment, this order had come from Uribe, Mirabel’s lover, who wanted to force “Young” to participate in a hold-up. But Carvalho doesn’t want to reveal any of this and lets “Chico”, already a drug addict, stay on the streets. 

Por encargo de “Rino” Santos, viejo entrenador de boxeo y amigo del boxeador acabado “Young” Serra, Carvalho investiga la muerte de éste y el paradero de su ex esposa, Maribel, para que se haga cargo del chico de ambos, “Chico” Serra. Siguiendo las indicaciones de “Chico”.

Carvalho interroga a la prostituta Mimi y a su chulo Walter, y descubre que este mató a “Young” (que venia machacado de su último combate) cuando solo quería aplicarle un castigo físico por orden de Uribe, el amante de Maribel, que quería forzar a “Young” a participar en un atraco. Pero Carvalho prefiere no revelar nada de esto y deja que “Chico”, ya convertido en un drogadicto, permanezca en la calle.

Pepe Carvalho – 2 La dama inacabada

An executive who goes by the name of Casimiro Martí hires Carvalho to get proof of his wife Susana having an affair so that he can divorce her. Carvalho travels to Menorca, staying in the same hotel as Susana, where he manages to get a few photos but, soon after, her supposed lover is killed by the man who hired Pepe for the case.

On the flight back to Barcelona, Carvalho discovers that her “lover” was the real Casimiro Martí, and that his assasin, Jordí Basté was Susana’s real lover. In fact, he hired Pepe, giving himself an alibi, and creating great confusion, giving the couple who were in fact involved in a huge scam, time to leave the country unnoticed.

Un ejecutivo que se da a conocer como Casimiro Martí encarga a Carvalho obtener fotografías de su esposa Susana con su amante, para conseguir el divorcio. Carvalho se desplaza a Menorca, se aloja en el mismo hotel que Susana y consigue unas fotos, pero poco después presencia como el supuesto amante de Susana es asesinado por el hombre que le ha encargado el caso.

A su vuelta a Barcelona, Carvalho descubre que el “amante” era el auténtico Casimiro Martí, y que su asesino, Jordi Basté, el amante real de Susana, le ha contratado para que sirviera de testigo al crimen, creara confusión, y diera tiempo a la pareja, que estaba implicada en una enorme estafa, a abandonar el país.

Pepe Carvalho – 4 La curva de la muerte

Carvalho travels to Galicia to see his daughter Dolores, at the request of Muriel, his ex-wife, who is now married to Marxist anthropologist Vicente Montejano. The following day on Carvalho’s arrival, Vicente picks up a young hitchiker and has a minor car accident, after which the girl disappears.

Vicente and Carvahlo try unsuccessfully to track her down, but they hear a story about a girl who died in an car accident on the exact same stretch of the motorway, who appears to drivers in order to warn them about the danger.

Carvalho, concerned about the state that Vicente is getting into, pays a young girl to pose as the hitchhiker and offer a convincing explanation of her disappearance to him. Soon after however, it is Carvalho himself who sees the hitchhiker, only he’d rather not investigate it.

Carvalho se desplaza a Galicia para conocer a su hija Dolores, a petición de Muriel, su ex esposa, casada ahora con el antropólogo marxista Vicente Montejano. Al día siguiente a la llegada de Carvalho, Vicente recoge a una joven autoestopista y tiene un pequeño accidente, tras el cual la chica desaparece.

Vicente y Carvalho siguen su pista infructuosamente, y conocen la leyenda de una chica que murió en accidente de automóvil, en la misma curva en que le ocurrió a Vicente, y que se aparece a los conductores para prevenirles.

Carvalho, preocupado por el estado en que ha caído Vicente, paga a una chica para que se haga pasar por la autoestopista y ofrezca a su amigo una explicación convincente. Poco después, es el propio Carvalho quien ve a la autoestopista, pero prefiere no indagar.

Tiempo de revancha

Pedro Bangoa is an ex-union activist, who, alter “cleaning up” his past, finds work in some mines owned by the Tulsaco corporation. There he meets an old friend who suggests he simulates an accident and pretends to be dumb, so he can claim a higher salary. The friend then dies by accident in an explosion in the mines, and Pedro will take his lawsuit multinational until the last consequence.

Pedro Bengoa es un ex activista sindical que, previa “limpieza” de su pasado, consigue trabajo en las minas de la empresa Tulsaco. Allí se reencuentra con un viejo amigo que le propone simular un accidente y hacerse pasar por mudo para cobrar una alta indemnización.

Accidentalmente el amigo muere en medio de una explosión pero Pedro llevará su pleito con la multinacional hasta sus últimas consecuencias.
