Juan Ruiz, a young bourgeois poet, avoiding a marriage commitment arranged by his parents, tries to settle down with a beautiful aristocrat with whom he is in love. But she rejects him at the last minute and the youth is forced to undertake the search for the perfect love. His encounters with several women gradually change his concept of love.

Through a friend, Trotaconventos, he meets doña Endrina, a beautiful young girl from a noble family. Their love is protected, but then doña Endrina dies, and Juan flees with Trotaconventos, fearing the reactions of the family. Juan’s incentive to live takes the form of music, composing songs and ’tonadillas’, which bring him much popularity and recognition.

 

Juan Ruiz un joven poeta de familia burguesa, eludiendo un compromiso matrimonial concertado por sus padres, intenta formalizar su vida con una bella aristócrata a la que ama. Pero ella lo rechaza en el último instante y el jóven se ve obligado a emprender el camino en busca del amor ideal. Su encuentro con varias mujeres, va transformando su concepto de amor.

A través de una simpática alcahueta, Trotaconventos, conoce a doña Endrina, una bella joven de noble familia. La vieja protege estos amores, pero doña Endrina muere, y Juan huye con Trotaconventos ante el temor a las represalias por parte de la familia. Juan halla un aliciente en su vida componiendo cantares y tonadillas que le convierten en un personaje popular.
